Aug 04 2010

Very nice start of the day with good profitable trades - then pushed it a little bit more than I should, so a few stops eliminated most of profits. Did I mention I dislike August trading?

Session Time: Wed Aug 04 00:00:00 2010

[10:13] {Threei}  I don't believe it will go much further
[10:13] {gregns} missed it
[10:13] {Threei}  well, 1 cent is a bit too strict for such volatile stock
[10:14] {gregns} i know it blew right by
[10:17] {Threei}  (CH) China property trust strss tests will assume up to a 60% decline in home prices

[10:21] {ese} vad....does aig  look like a viable break at .20
[10:21] {Threei}  if stays above .20
[10:21] {Threei}  totally ese
[10:21] {ese} tks
[10:22] {i2r} Short opportunity with PCLN, Vad?
[10:22] {Threei}  RIMM touched 1:1, missed exit
[10:22] {Threei}  I doubt it, i2r
[10:23] {Threei}  and anyway, with this spread it's beyond acceptable risk for me
[10:23] {Threei}  30-40 cents spread
[10:23] {Threei}  yikes
[10:23] {ese} Laig .21
[10:23] {i2r} ok thx
[10:24] {hawk} i tried shorting PCLN last nite, 50 shares, wasn't a fun experience
[10:24] {i2r} buying last night after close would have been a nice experience
[10:24] {hawk} buying where i tried to short it would have too ;)
[10:25] {i2r} I can appreciate good earnings, but $50 rise overnight? too much for any stock I'd say
[10:25] {Threei}  remember... overbought gets overboughter
[10:26] {Threei}  look at it this way
[10:26] {Threei}  isn't such excessive gap is absolutely obviously unsustainable, to anyone who merely glances at it?
[10:26] {i2r} interesting enough, SOLF went up quite a bit during open but didn't recover to that level, even on the same day
[10:27] {Threei}  if your answer is yes as it well should be, then next question is, can everyone make money on obvious trade?
[10:27] {i2r} that's my feeling, how can it sustain going up at this level?
[10:27] {Threei}  knowing how market works, isn't it more likely that it will go against obvious
[10:27] {i2r} i see
[10:27] {Threei}  killing all who goes for "what everyone knows"
[10:28] {i2r} I've seen that behaviour on a number of accasions
[10:28] {Threei}  'cause if pbvious things worked in the market
[10:28] {i2r} occasion
[10:28] {Threei}  wouldn't everyone abandon all other activities and make insane money just trading,
[10:28] {i2r} I think that's right out of the the Tape reading techniques book
[10:29] {Threei}  which would have ended the civilization
[10:29] {i2r} well, not everyone would risk that much to test the obvious :)
[10:29] {Threei}  no one grows food
[10:29] {i2r} nah, civ would keep going :)
[10:29] {Threei}  everyone trades food prices
[10:29] {Threei}  AIF 1:2 meanwhile
[10:29] {Threei}  AIG
[10:29] {Threei}  also, you'd have to answer this question:
[10:29] {Threei}  if everyone knows X price must be bought,
[10:29] {gregns} thks ese on AIG
[10:30] {Threei}  who would they buy it from?
[10:30] {Threei}  (CH) China property trust strss tests will assume up to a 60% decline in home prices
[10:30] {Threei}  *DOE CRUDE: -2.78M V -1.2ME; GASOLINE: +730K V -1ME; DISTILLATE: +2.1M V +1ME UTILIZATION: 91.2% V 90.1%E
[10:30] {i2r} we'd switch to barter, no more currency, no?
[10:30] {Threei}  I mean, everyone knows to buy at $30,
[10:30] {Threei}  question is, from whom?
[10:31] {Threei}  who would sell if it's an obvious buy, and everyone trades obvious and wins?
[10:31] {Threei}  the idea that market can work on obvious things ends:
[10:31] {Threei}  1. any price movement
[10:31] {Threei}  2. market itself
[10:31] {Threei}  3. whole civilization
[10:32] {Threei}  so... obvious doesn't work :)
[10:32] {Threei}  amazes me that such obvious things are not obvious to everyone, and people continue arguing that market should do this and this because common sense says so
[10:33] {Threei}  but then I remember that the fact that it's not obvious to everyone is what makes market and civilization work
[10:33] {Threei}  and I am at peace with it :)
[10:33] {i2r} :)
[10:35] {Threei}  and just to illustrate the point, PCLN keeps going
[10:35] {Threei}  everything is fine with the world
[10:35] {Threei}  earth keeps revolving
[10:36] {i2r} well, nothing ever goes up without a shake :)
[10:37] {i2r} but it doesn't mean we have to employ that type of trading method :)
[10:37] {i2r} when setups work
[10:37] {Threei}  of course
[10:37] {Threei}  but the point is:
[10:37] {i2r} more consistently
[10:37] {ese} am out aig at .40 +.19
[10:37] {Threei}  read the chart and go with your read,
[10:38] {Threei}  but never trade off the idea of what makes sense in terms of "normal"
[10:38] {Threei}  wtg ese
[10:39] {i2r} got it
[10:39] {Threei}  last ppoint:
[10:39] {Threei}  this general idea is what lies in the foundation of tape reading method,
[10:40] {ese} tks
[10:40] {Threei}  and the whole book is devoted to showing how this broad philosophical view translates into particular ways to read the chart
[10:40] {Threei}  taking you step by step from general idea to exact entries and exits
[10:40] {nemo} bp db?
[10:40] {nemo} or short

[13:38] {Threei}  i doubt it
[13:38] {nemo} rimm coming into serious support
[13:39] {Threei}  no
[13:39] {Threei}  RIMM is more likely to break down this time
[13:39] {Threei} Short Setup: RIMM  53 break
[13:39] {nemo} I said coming into support, no long or short
[13:42] {strider} still valid?
[13:42] {Threei}  yup
[13:46] {Threei}  let's modify it, to get a better entry
[13:46] {Threei} Short Setup: RIMM  .05 break if stays under .15
[13:50] {magoo} wheres your partial .95?
[13:50] {Threei}  .90 - .85, yes
[13:50] {Threei}  .90 - .95
[13:50] {Threei}  with any market help should be good for 1:3
[13:51] {nemo} oops
[13:51] {Threei}  ?
[13:54] {magoo} i like trade both ways vad, as long to .15\
06[13:58] * Threei hits RIMM over the head woth 2x4
[13:59] {strider} old english
[14:00] {Threei}  spanking new 2x4 though
[14:02] {Threei}  no go
[14:03] {nemo} wow, coudln't get out until .22
[14:03] {Threei}  ??
[14:03] {Threei}  you are kidding
[14:03] {nemo} flew right over
[14:03] {nemo} nope
[14:03] {Threei}  easy .17
[14:03] {strider} had limit set at .22, got .17
[14:03] {nemo} had it set at .16 flew right over
[14:03] {Threei}  sheesh
[14:04] {Threei}  don't you know better than giving no slack whatsoever?
[14:04] {strider} here goes futs
[14:14] {_luvtherays} Can i get a little feedback for a rookie, i did this based on my understanding, did a sell stop order of rimm at 53.05. did a buy to cover at 53.90 and 53.85.  my sell stop got executed, my buy stops(profits never got executed), where should i have put in my stop loss and why ?
[14:15] {strider} shouuld have been buy stop order.  You were short the stock.
[14:15] {Threei}  stop loss was above .15
[14:16] {_luvtherays} why did you use .15
[14:16] {Threei}  13:46] {Threei} Short Setup: RIMM .05 break if stays under .15
[14:16] {Threei}  that qualifies .15 as trade invalidation
[14:16] {Threei}  because it was nearest resistance
[14:16] {Threei}  and break of resistance invalidates the short
[14:18] {strider} stop bal BP -.05
[14:18] {_luvtherays} i'm somewhat new to ta, is the resistance at the hi  of the 10:46 and 10:48 2 minute bars
[14:19] {Threei}  10?
[14:19] {Threei}  let's use NY time, to unigy things across time zones
[14:19] {Threei}  unify
[14:20] {_luvtherays} im on western time - i guess 2:46 and 2:48 (i guess 10:46 would put me somewhere in between california and hawaii
[14:20] {Threei}  rouufhly from 13:30 RIMM stayed under .15
[14:20] {_luvtherays} k
[14:21] {_luvtherays} one more thing - this is much appreciated, did the level2 or time and sales come into play - How ?
[14:22] {Threei}  no
[14:22] {_luvtherays} thanks - im off to a good start
[14:25] {Threei} Short Setup: GLD  .85 break
[14:26] {Threei}  .95 is invalidation
[14:26] {Threei}  scratch that
[14:27] {strider} doesn't itch.
[14:32] {nemo} gld long here?
[14:34] {Threei}  too slow
[14:35] {nemo} yeah but if it holds the trend line on this pullback could be valid

[14:51] {Threei}  let's see ig this turns out last pullback before push
[14:54] {Threei} Long Setup:  RIMM  .40 break
[14:54] {Threei}  stop under .35 for scalpers, .30 for day traders

[15:45] {nemo} yeah, I was looking at it on the open mags
[15:46] {nemo} but missed it, when I looked 2 minutes later it was up two buks
