Jan 24 2013

No comments needed other than CAT becomes our staple stock - 3-4 trades on it daily. This one was 4th I think - 2 longs, 2 shorts.

Very nice day overall, with CAT and FB being main dish, with large wins, and stops being much smaller.

01[10:01] {Threei}  *(CA) BANK OF CANADA (BOC) LEAVES INTEREST RATES UNCHANGED AT 1.00%; AS EXPECTED- More muted inflation outlook - While some modest withdrawal of monetary policy stimulus will likely be required over time, consistent with achieving the 2 percent inflation target, the more muted inflation outlook and the beginnings of a more constructive evolution of imbalances in the household sector suggest that the timing of any such withdrawal is less imminent than previously anticipated - The economy will now hit full capacity only in the second half of 2014, not the end of 2013 as predicted in the October Monetary Policy

[10:34] {scottie} Isn't it an inverse C&H ?
01[10:36] {Threei}  it is, what makes me doubtful is the fact that it holds above its low while SPY makes new ones
[10:36] {scottie} tks
01[10:37] {Threei}  compare their respective charts,
01[10:37] {Threei}  you'll see relative strength
01[10:37] {Threei}  andf this kind tends to hold and bounce as soon as SPY tries to strengthen
01[10:38] {Threei}  worse yet, it can turn into trap, by dipping briefly under support, triggering your short and immediate;y recovering.
01[10:38] {Threei}  It'd tale a lot of new weakness in market to make this short work
01[10:38] {Threei}  not impossible, just low odds play

Jan 22 2013

Catch(es) of the day: two trades on CAT. First is bounce setup, catching pullback for a long entry. Second is clean ascending triangle with nice juicy 1:3 target

Other than that, nicely profitable day even though afternoon is traditionally inactive.

01[14:44] {Threei}  not sure
01[14:44] {Threei}  not delighted
[14:48] {nemo} we should just go long, come back in May sell, go to the beach, and then see what happens
01[14:48] {Threei}  bad idea
01[14:49] {Threei}  debt ceiling thing will shake you out of your longs
[14:49] {nemo} no, that's dead and gone
01[14:49] {Threei}  not at all
[14:50] {nemo} republicans have zero leverage
01[14:50] {Threei}  only postponed
[14:50] {nemo} and they will continue to postpone, they have no political leverage
01[14:50] {Threei}  so what?
01[14:50] {Threei}  doesn't mean they can't make a spectacle out of it which will shake the market
01[14:52] {Threei}  look at December
01[14:52] {Threei}  they had even less leverage with fiscal cliff
01[14:53] {Threei}  yet sent SPY full 5 dollars down
[14:53] {nemo} yeah, but that was it, they won't mess with it anymore, there's no political advantage...fight is over
[15:02] {dptl} cov .25 short?
01[15:03] {Threei}  i think so
[15:03] {dptl} hmm
[15:19] {dino} last 2 weeks, this market is not my style
[15:19] {dptl} got to leave early...see ya tomorrow all have a dood evening
[15:19] {dino} no spikes, no capits. unbelievable
[15:19] {dino} i sit for hours doing nothing
01[15:19] {Threei}  remember Han of 2012? same thing
01[15:19] {Threei}  Han
01[15:19] {Threei}  Jan
[15:19] {dptl} good evening lol
01[15:30] {Threei} Long Setup:  GS  146 break small shares
01[15:30] {Threei}  If holds  .85
[15:31] {nemo} There are less structural worries now so volatility disappearing...this condition will likely last longer than last year
01[15:32] {Threei}  I don't npw... there is too much complacency in the air
01[15:32] {Threei}  this is when unforeseen shocks become more likely
01[15:32] {Threei}  and when they occur, you better pray you are a day trader and have no positions
[15:34] {nemo} pru interesting
[15:35] {dino} i don't know what to make of it. just know it doesn't fit my style
01[15:35] {Threei}  right
[15:35] {nemo} if you're specialty is volatility plays, you will be bored for a while
01[15:35] {Threei}  what I am saying is, I don't think it will last any monger than it did last year
01[15:35] {Threei}  longer
[15:36] {nemo} there is no longer the unsurety of the 2007-2012 period.
01[15:36] {Threei}  we are not talking unsurety
01[15:36] {Threei}  we are talking absense of volatilioty
01[15:36] {Threei}  and you can't say we had none during these 5 years
[15:37] {nemo} market doesn't have the instability of the last 5 years
01[15:37] {Threei}  OK
01[15:37] {Threei}  you think everything is so stable, you can take second mortgage on everything you own and invest? try it, I dare you :)
01[15:38] {Threei}  GS 1:1
[15:42] {jdetente} shorting the VXX lately has almost been free money. I'm sure that will end when least expected
01[15:44] {Threei}  this is exactly my point
01[15:44] {Threei}  crowd gets complacent
[15:45] {dino} gut feels that
[15:45] {dino} something not right
01[15:45] {Threei}  we all know what happens is merely windows draping
01[15:45] {Threei}  can kicking
01[15:45] {Threei}  etc
01[15:45] {Threei}  this kind of things does unravel
01[15:46] {Threei}  it's being held together by duct tape
01[15:46] {Threei}  not that we can know when it unravels
01[15:46] {Threei}  but unravel it will
[15:46] {dino} sort of ken fischer "what do you believe that isn't true?"
01[15:46] {Threei}  :)
01[15:47] {Threei}  think of it this way: PTB spent enourmous amount of money, effort, political capital and credibility to hold the thing afloat,
01[15:47] {Threei}  and the more it invests the thinner it stretchesd
01[15:47] {Threei}  and the closer the end, just like with any pendulum push
[15:48] {dino} ptb?
01[15:48] {Threei}  powers that be :)
[15:48] {dino} ahhh, sort of like the ppt
01[15:49] {Threei}  pretty much, only on a scale of the world's economy
01[15:49] {Threei}  where the next hole is going to be punched, we don't knwo - and neither do they
01[15:50] {Threei}  they work as firemen, putting out fires here and there
01[15:50] {Threei}  meanwhile whole forest is smoldering
01[15:52] {Threei}  the only way they can keep it afloat for a long time is to move to dictatorship, and if that happens - we have more problems than market volatility :)
[15:53] {KSystems} Boo
01[15:53] {Threei}  hey KS!
[15:53] {KSystems} :)
01[15:54] {Threei}  Ok guys, thank you all
01[15:54] {Threei}  have a good evening, see you tomorrow
[15:54] {KSystems} you had a good day?
01[15:54] {Threei}  pretty much

Nemo's Findings week of 01/20/2012

(Course on chart pattern recognition is available now: http://www.realitytrader.com/111trades.html

Well, the beat goes on....up and up and up we go...Indexes closed at the highs, and actually continued on after the close.  With the inauguration on Monday, we likely gap up on Tuesday.  Here are the charts from the past week.  The shaded areas are places I plot where there is approximate confluence between levels:

The VIX just continues to drift lower, nobody feels the need to hedge.  You can almost feel the euphoria building. Economic news has continued to be nominal to good.  A few hiccups here and there so far on earnings, but generally they've been good.  From the short term trading point of view, everything is hunky-dory.   We get gap ups every few days that create overbought conditions, then we get a few days of sideways action to correct through time.  So, what can go wrong...

In the short term, we have the debt ceiling issue.  Kabuki theater if you ask me.  Republicans are neutered, walking around with their tail between their legs.  I always say the best political solution is usually not the best operational solution.  Given their political leverage (which is nil) the best political solution would be to give in to the democrats and let them do what they want, because the majority of the US wants what the democrats want.  It's that simple.  As Churchill said, best argument against democracy is a 5 minute conversation with the average voter.  We are a relatively socialistic nation that taxes as if we're capitalistic.
So, in the short term, nothing should derail the market fundamentally, other than garden variety corrections.  This market has been correcting through time as opposed to price, that is really strong.  The only thing easily visible on the horizon is the Feds recent commentary that withdrawing "stimulus" may be sooner than later, but what happens to the markets when they try to withdraw?  How can we afford to finance our debt if interest rates increase?  This whole period has been an experiment that is not yet ended.

Now does that mean something more immediate can't manifest and cause problems?  Of course not.  Well, here's the week that is...

Market Week Wrap-up

Equities Push Higher On Better Data, Decent Earnings, Potential Debt Ceiling Truce

- US equities drifted higher this week as decent US earnings, some good economic data and a de-escalation of tension on the debt ceiling front inspired confidence. The S&P500 and the DJIA both pushed out to fresh five-year highs, while the Russell 2000 and the Dow transports index marked all-time highs. Conversely, the VIX index moved below 13 for the first time since 2007; one trader mentioned that participants are "scrambling for upside protection now." After gathering for a leadership conference this week, the House Republicans offered a consolatory proposal that would push back the debt ceiling for three months while the spending component of the fiscal cliff battle was settled. The December beige book report indicated that the economy expanded modestly in the final month of 2012. The initial jobless claims fell to levels last seen in January of 2008. December housing starts were much better than expected, with huge gains seen in multi-family construction. US retail sales continued their slow but steady gains in December, reflecting the strong individual SSS reports out at the beginning of the month. In Europe, bailout nations continued to see decent results from the sale of sovereign debt across the curve, further suggesting that the European debt crisis has been brought under control. US Treasury yields remain near recent multi month highs as investors continue to ask if this could be the beginning a long term migration into stocks. For the week, the DJIA rose 1.2%, the S&P 500 gained 0.9% and the Nasdaq tacked on 0.3%.

- The Congressional Republicans appear to have listened to more reasonable voices in the party and concluded that an immediate clash with the White House over the debt ceiling would be a losing proposition. Coming into the week there were reports that the party would be willing to risk a government shutdown to push its agenda in the debt ceiling negotiations. Then on Friday, House Speaker Boehner offered a new strategy for dealing with the issue: a budget must be passed before the debt limit is increased, and the House will offer a three-month extension of the debt limit with the condition that the bill will obligate the Democrat-controlled Senate to lower spending levels. During the debt ceiling negotiations last August, the Obama Administration repeatedly rejected any short-term extensions of the debt limit. However the White House seems interested in playing ball this time around. Later on Friday, White House Spokesman Carney said the administration is encouraged by the proposals, but emphasized that the House must pass a 'clean' debt ceiling increase that is free of conditions. The House may move to pass the increase as soon as next week.

- Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan and Morgan Stanley reported excellent results in Q4 reports this week. Both Morgan Stanley and Goldman widely beat expectations, with both earnings and revenue well ahead of estimates. Very strong investment banking business drove good results at both banks. JPMorgan also reported good results in the quarter, with profits up a bit more than 50% y/y. Bank of America and Citigroup had more problematic Q4 reports: Citi's EPS was well below expectations after taking into account huge legal costs and corporate restructuring charges while BoA was weighed down by the recently announced $5B in MBS repurchase charges.

- Among other notable earnings reports this week, General Electric largely met expectations and reiterated its FY13 forecast. The firm's backlog returned to record-high levels by the end of the quarter and CEO Immelt talked a lot about solid emerging market demand, especially from China. Share of Intel tanked as the firm reported that its gross margins continued to shrink. American Express's Q4 results were right in line with their preliminary Q4 numbers out a week ago, although the firm disclosed that US and international card services net income fell sharply on a y/y basis, even as revenue grew.

- Trouble with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner was in headlines all week. The FAA and the Japanese and European air safety regulators grounded the 787 fleet until further notice. Operators will have to prove that the new plane's battery systems are safe before the planes fly again. Reports suggest that the problem is in the backup battery system, where voltage exceeding the design limit was applied to the batteries designed by GS Yuasa Corp.

- EUR/USD maintained a steady tone this week despite some soft European economic data. The pair traded between 1.3255 and 1.3400 after another round of peripheral bond auctions delivered solid results. Analysts pointed out Spain's sale of long-term bonds with lower yields and good demand on Thursday as reinforcing confidence in Madrid's ability to finance itself for now. Portugal also appears ready to rejoin debt markets after the cabinet said they were allowing the IGCP to issue debt. There were press reports that European banks are beginning to repay their three-year LTRO loans from the ECB, a move which is being seen as a possible catalyst that would push up both Eonia and EUR. EUR/USD hiccupped midweek after outgoing Eurogroup head Juncker warned about tolerating an excessively high euro FX rate, although the move was retraced when ECB Governor Nowotny refuted Juncker's claim and said there is no long-term uptrend in the cards for the euro.

- The yen saw some retracement early in the week as dealers latched upon comments made by new Japanese Economy Minister Amari, who said the yen had come to a good level (USD/JPY was around 90 and EUR/JPY was around 120) and that further declines could harm the economy. After taking criticism for the remarks, Amari claimed his statements had been misinterpreted and pointed out he never said that ¥100 level was a turning point. Japan PM Abe's Economic Adviser Hamada helped the pair test above the 90 handle after saying USD/JPY at ¥95 or ¥100 was not a problem and would not cause an inflation scare.

- On Friday China released GDP data for Q4 and 2012, as well as December output and retail sales reports, all of which beat estimates by slim margins. China's +7.9% GDP growth rate in Q4 was an improvement from Q3's +7.4% rate (a 3.5 year low), although the 2012 full-year GDP figure of +7.8% marked China's lowest rate of growth since 1999. The China Stats Bureau put a positive spin on the figure, asserting that annual GDP growth of +7-8% would be a good balance to end the period of "super rapid growth."

01[14:47] {Threei}  not true
[14:48] {dino} w/o the house, nothing passes
01[14:48] {Threei}  they still have an option not to sign off yet anohter spending bout
01[14:48] {Threei}  they don't have guts to do it
[14:48] {nemo} they can't win the politics on that one
01[14:48] {Threei}  "ah, we will be lamed for this and that"
01[14:48] {Threei}  guess what - they'll be blamed in any case
01[14:49] {Threei}  so might just take a stand and do something good for the country while taking blame anyway
[14:49] {nemo} nah....always lose the shutdown battle, politically they should let the democrats do what they want
01[14:49] {Threei}  they will lose politics if they put a stop to spending, and they will lose politics if they don't
[14:49] {nemo} and just put it in their laps
01[14:50] {Threei}  they did it already over last 4 years, many times
01[14:50] {Threei}  look where it got thenm
[14:50] {nemo} yeah, and when they make a stand, they get killed
01[14:50] {Threei}  not only they lost presidential elections and decreased their numbers in both senate and house,
01[14:51] {Threei}  but for the first time in last 3 years poll shows more trust dems on economy
01[14:51] {Threei}  it goes like this, next midterm they'll lose house
01[14:52] {Threei}  isn't it obvious that they lose PR battle?
[14:53] {jdetente} The Repubs cannot win the PR game...ever
01[14:53] {Threei}  nope... almost by definition
[14:53] {jdetente} they never have...even when Reagan and the Bushes were in power...the next generation was ready to take them out and put in a Democrat
[14:54] {nemo} it's simple, we're becoming Europe
01[14:54] {Threei}  but still, if you look at state level, governor and houses, you see pragmatism taking root in many states
[14:54] {dino} unfortunately nemo
[14:54] {jdetente} when I was in university all of my professors and classmates talked about how much better Europe was/is

[14:59] {jdetente} They are big here. This one of their aims: ‘As Chicanas and Chicanos of Aztlán, we are a nationalist movement of Indigenous Gente that lay claim to the land that is ours by birthright. As a nationalist movement we seek to free our people from the exploitation of an oppressive society that occupies our land. Thus, the principle of nationalism serves to preserv

01[15:18] {Threei}  (US) White House Spokesman Carney: Administration is encouraged by Republican debt limit proposals, emphasizes that the House must pass a clean debt ceiling increase that is free of conditions***Note that the statement makes no mention of length of debt limit increase, but it does not express opposition to short-term one. Also note that the proposed Republican House bill would obligate the Senate to pass a budget, which may not make it 'clean'
[15:19] {dino} lol free of conditions. why, because obummer says so
01[15:19] {Threei}  (US) Senate Majority Leader Reid (D-NV): If the House can pass a clean debt ceiling increase bill, the Senate would be happy to consider it***Note that clean likely means "without conditions," while the House bill will obligate the Senate to lower spending levels
01[15:20] {Threei}  (US) House Speaker Boehner (R-OH): Govt needs to pass a budget before the debt limit is increased, House will obligate the Senate to lower spending levels- Notes that there should be no long term debt limit increase before the Senate passes a budget - Separate reports suggest the House will pass a three-month increase in the debt limit to April 15th. Will require a budget to be passed or Congressional pay will be withheld - House Majority Leader Cantor (R-VA): The House will vote next week on a three-month extension of the debt ceiling **Reminder: On Jan 17th, Rep Ryan said the House GOP was discussing the possibility of a short-term debt limit extension. During the debt ceiling negotiations last August, the Obama Administration repeatedly rejected any short-term extensions of the debt limit.

Jan 17 2013

The pleasure of a 100% day... 8 trades, 8 wins, most of them 1:2-ers. Adjusting to the market... again. Go through the calls and put entries and exits on the chart to see how they worked. One of note was HLF long, with nicely nailed reversal. The rest was of garden variety (FB, CAT and whatnot)
