Jan 06 2010

One more day of low volatility and things working pretty much in random fashion. The same setups on the same stocks work and fail with 50/50 odds.

Session Time: Wed Jan 06 00:00:00 2010

[08:21] {nemo} morning from the frozen People's Republic of Massachusetts
[08:22] {strider} morning from the moderately frozen south.
[08:23] {nemo} damn confederates
[08:23] {strider} 22F here.
[08:23] {strider} damn yankees.
[08:24] {nemo} Funny...we've got a Civil War monument in town it faces south. A friend of mine's grandfather, who had a wicked sense of humor, says it's because you always had to keep an eye on those southerners
[08:24] {strider} now that's true.
[08:25] {nemo} When I lived in SC about 20 years ago, I was surprised to see the Confederate flag flying over the capital, as well as more than a few bumper stickers that said "Lee surrendered, I didn't"
[08:27] {strider} I think it was still there until last year or so.
[08:27] {strider} People confuse the map with the territory.
[08:27] {nemo} within a few years, yeah
[08:28] {strider} iow, confuse the symbol for the attitude.
[08:28] {strider} or, confuse allegiance to the conferacy with allegiance to slavery/racism.
[08:28] {nemo} yeah...well, SC was where I first saw the bumper sticker, "The voices in my head told me to stay home from work today and clean my guns."
[08:29] {nemo} No, I thought the former, not the latter. As a matter of fact, there seemed to be alot less racial tension there than up here
[08:29] {nemo} It's a big money making industry up here
[08:29] {strider} Only if you planned on attacking us.
[08:31] {nemo} then again, up here I first saw the bumper sticker, "If I'd known what would have happened, I'd have picked my own cotton."
[08:32] {Raven} there will soon be a Federal Agency to regulate bumper stickers
[08:32] {nemo} I don't doubt it
[08:33] {strider} Hey, that would be a great bumper sticker!
[08:33] {Raven} never thought of that ... I'll be RICHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
[08:34] {Threei} hah... ese's going to make a killing on ABAT
[08:34] {nemo} yeah, saw that
[08:35] {strider} re: picking cotton......I tried that for about 5 minutes...pure misery.
[08:37] {strider} FDO could be interesting today.
[08:38] {strider} Vad, what default route do you use?
[08:41] {Threei} for NASDAQ I usually don't bother to turn routing on at all,
[08:41] {Threei} unless I just switched from listed stock and forgot
[08:41] {Threei} for listed, I check the Route On box and keep it on NASDAQ
[08:42] {Threei} mostly to avoid MLCO which is default for smart route on listeds
[08:43] {strider} so you're using smart route for nasdaq?
[08:43] {strider} didn't understand: " for NASDAQ I usually don't bother to turn routing on at all,"
[08:44] {Threei} for nasdaq stocks
[08:45] {Threei} yes
[08:46] {strider} I've found that nasdaq often doesn't have best bid/ask when trading HOG.
[08:46] {strider} so when I try to enter/exit at limit, I don't get filled.
[08:46] {strider} Was wondering route would be best to use.
[08:47] {nemo} what are you using then?
[08:47] {strider} Been switching to smart route, just cause it was first in line.
[08:47] {nemo} oy vay
[08:47] {strider} Don't know if fees are higher for that, though.
[08:48] {nemo} smart hits a dark pool first I think
[08:49] {nemo} GETCO to be specific
[08:49] {strider} Is that a good thing or a bad thing:)
[08:50] {nemo} well, it's cheaper if you get it from GETCO, but...it tries there first and then proceeds to other sources, which takes time, so if you need fast execution...forget it
[08:50] {strider} what do you use for listed/nasdaq--nemo.
[08:51] {Threei} wait
[08:51] {nemo} me..yes
[08:51] {Threei} strider... if you have Route Out checked in the big window that pops up when you right click on level2,
[08:51] {Threei} you don't care who is at the bid or offer
[08:52] {Threei} your order will hit them all
[08:53] {nemo} vad, on that general tab under "Hit Adjust", what do you have as a value for the NASDAQ window
[08:54] {Threei} zero
[08:54] {nemo} ty
[08:54] {Threei} but I am not sure it's optimal
[08:54] {Threei} I don't remember what it is
[08:55] {Threei} it's been years since I configured all that
[08:55] {nemo} for some reason, mine was set at .0020
[08:55] {Threei} ARCA is set to .03
[08:55] {strider} I have all boxes checked for 'route out'.....still haven't been getting fills through Nasdaq.
[08:55] {nemo} .03 or .0030
[08:56] {strider} Is that under the shave column, nemo?
[08:56] {Threei} 08:46] {strider} I've found that nasdaq often doesn't have best bid/ask when trading HOG.
[08:56] {Threei} [08:46] {strider} so when I try to enter/exit at limit, I don't get filled.
[08:56] {Threei} that's why
[08:56] {nemo} just above Route Out
[08:56] {Threei} move a few cents beyond, you'll get your fills
[08:56] {strider} confused.
[08:57] {Threei} you are trying to hit inside quote, if you are a LITTLE LATE IT GETS AWAY FROM YOU
[08:57] {strider} that's not what I mean.
[08:58] {strider} I'm just trying to enter or exit at static best bid/ask. It's not moving.
[08:58] {strider} I must be missing something on lvl 2.
[08:58] {Threei} buying at the offer or selling at bid?
[08:58] {Threei} or buying at bid and selling at the offer?
[08:59] {strider} I think the first, of course........but I may sometimes try to do the second.
[08:59] {strider} and that's what's happening.
[08:59] {strider} I'll watch it.
[08:59] {Threei} if the second, then no wonder
[08:59] {strider} yeah.
[08:59] {Threei} if first, andf there are enough shares, your fill is instant
[08:59] {strider} nemo....what does 'hit adjust' mean?
[09:00] {strider} kk
[09:00] {strider} k
[09:00] {nemo} I don't know, just saw the setting
[09:01] {Threei} by the sound of it, I'd think it does automatically what I do by clicking at the price beyond market
[09:01] {Threei} but let's not assume and ask Trev instead
[09:01] {strider} yeah, that would be good to know.
[09:02] {strider} Also, I don't know what the 'shave' column does.
[09:04] {Threei} there is a video tutorial on Laser
[09:05] {strider} yeah, I've watched it. have a nemo-memory, though.
[09:06] {strider} Besides, they assume you already know what a lot of those terms mean. Like 'shave'. Seem to recall they don't define it.
[09:06] {Threei} well, if you watch the part that shows what it does it should explain things, no?
[09:07] {strider} My recollection is that it just says something like: if you want to change the shave settings, here is where you do it.
[09:07] {Threei} that's helpful
[09:07] {strider} yeah:)
[09:08] {strider} FNSR, CREE FDO

[09:32] {Threei} PIMCO's Bill Gross Monthly Outlook: US and UK may suffer as exit strategies are implemented
[09:32] {Threei} - "If 2008 was the year of financial crisis and 2009 the year of healing via monetary and fiscal stimulus packages, then 2010 appears likely to be the year of exit strategies, during which investors should consider economic fundamentals and asset markets that will soon be priced in a world less dominated by the government sector. If, in 2009, PIMCO recommended shaking hands with the government, we now ponder which government, and caution that the days of carefree check writing leading to debt issuance without limit or interest rate consequences may be numbered for all countries."

[07:41] {Threei} Geron Corp Journal publishes positive data on telomerase inhibitor in Glioblastoma
[07:41] {Threei} - This preclinical data demonstrates that telomerase inhibitor drug, imetelstat, inhibited telomerase activity and reduced tumor size in xenograft models of glioblastoma, and inhibited the activity of glioblastoma stem cells in culture. The data, authored by Geron collaborators at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, were published in the January 1, 2010 issue of Clinical Cancer Research.

[11:57] {Threei} VIX hit all time records if I remember correct
[11:57] {Threei} what happens next, when the pendulum goes this far?
[11:58] {nemo} snap back
[11:58] {Threei} naturally, it snaps all the way back
[11:58] {nemo} so now it's quiet as sheep
[11:58] {Threei} exactly
[11:58] {Threei} we are going through other extreme right now
[11:58] {nemo} EOW next
[11:58] {Threei} hours and hours with no movement, day after day
[11:59] {Threei} while nice volatility was there, we had no problem with profiting day after day
[11:59] {Threei} with many days running at 90-100%
[11:59] {Threei} VIX is around 20 now
[11:59] {Threei} volatility all but died,
[11:59] {Threei} so what's next?
[11:59] {nemo} EOW
[12:00] {Threei} another snap back
[12:00] {Threei} with sharp increase in volatility
[12:00] {nemo} probably not until after this earnings season
[12:00] {Threei} this is when we go through two stages:
[12:00] {Threei} first being,
[12:00] {Threei} adjusting to some changes in the movements,
[12:01] {Threei} spotting new sectors,
[12:01] {Threei} new patterns
[12:01] {Threei} not new exactly, rather: which of them work now
[12:01] {strider} long HOG .64, stop .58
[12:01] {Threei} and second being,
[12:01] {Threei} return to normal steady profits
[12:02] {Threei} with occasional bouts of momo movers
[12:02] {Threei} bringing icing on the cake,
[12:02] {Threei} making magoo happy
[12:02] {Threei} and creating general silly bubbling feeling
[12:03] {Threei} so there you go, brief overview of the situation and expectations
[12:03] {Threei} all who are at it for years see nothing out of ordinary - just a phase
[12:03] {Threei} newer traders percieve it differently somewhat, with feeling that it all happens for the first time ever
[12:04] {strider} that would be me.

[13:53] {Les} volume too shallow?

[13:55] {Les} can you see a bounce in that movement?
[13:55] {Les} or potential for?
[13:55] {Threei} this is sharp selloff with volume spike, likely to produce better bounce
[13:55] {Threei} not ready yet
[13:59] {Threei} ok, probably last leg of selling starts

[14:09] {Les} a big selloff like that doesn't guarantee trend reversal, or big bounce etc

[14:47] {Threei} I don't know Les
[14:47] {Threei} see, here is the problem I constantly have with the way you shape up the questions:
[14:47] {Threei} you expect prediction
[14:47] {Threei} what WILL happen
[14:47] {Threei} this is fundamentally incorrect approach
[14:49] {Threei} trader's view of the world:
[14:49] {Threei} events give me a clue how I need to react,
[14:49] {Threei} I react on them,
[14:50] {Threei} then it's world's business to tell me whether my reaction was right one or wrong

[15:15] {Threei} .82
[15:15] {strider} dino, you need to change drugs.
[15:15] {Threei} with stop under .70
[15:15] {dino} if i ran a fund, i'd sell now and take the rest of year off
[15:16] {Threei} well dino... this loss of orientation in the market happens to us now anf then,
[15:16] {Threei} real question is:
[15:16] {Threei} was there any single time that we haven't got it back?
[15:16] {nemo} no
[15:17] {larisa} second is much better on RIMM:) broken downtrend. imo :) so nexxt time do not be afraid and share :) not cash, but calls!
[15:17] {nemo} it happens once a season
[15:17] {Threei} but it was the same setup at the moment larisda
[15:17] {Threei} larisa, sorry
[15:17] {dino} bizzarro world. how do i buy up 5-9 pts in 2 dats, yet getting stopped on shorts
[15:17] {Threei} cover right part of the chart in both cases
[15:17] {Threei} they are identical
[15:18] {Threei} US) House Speaker Pelosi : final healthcare bill will contain what is needed to hold insurance companies accountable
[15:18] {Threei} oh good
[15:19] {Threei} howe is this such a big mystery what to do with insurance companies
[15:19] {larisa} second time we broke downtrend. and first time we were sliding down in full strendth. but may be i see it differently
[15:19] {dino} autos, then banks, next heath, airlines, etc
[15:19] {Threei} are you looking at the right time stamp, larisa?
[15:19] {nemo} no, the unions own the auto companies, they'll leave them alone
[15:20] {Threei} 14:06
[15:20] {dino} govt owns gm w/unions
[15:20] {Threei} bottom at .71, jump to over 66,
[15:20] {dino} and gmac
[15:20] {Threei} pullback to .80
[15:20] {Threei} clean prep for double bottom
[15:21] {Threei} second one could just drop to 65 and below just as well, ruining thias second setup
[15:21] {Threei} would be exact repetition of first one
[15:22] {Threei} small lear jet has crashed near the City of Chicago in a forest reserve - CNN
[15:22] {larisa} my chart setting are different from yours, so i will not argue. Can I like one setup more than the other? :)
[15:23] {Threei} you - can
[15:23] {larisa} please?
[15:23] {larisa} ty
[15:23] {Threei} I just can't say no to you
[15:23] {larisa} ty
[15:25] {Threei} (whispering) but it's the same setup (running away)
[15:26] {larisa} if you connect tops on that selloff you will see what I mean. Again, i use tick charts, may be it is not visible on time bars
[15:26] {larisa} and i am too lazy to check :)
[15:27] {Threei} gimme a few secs
[15:28] {Threei} on my chart, 14:22 entry would be what matches your idea
[15:29] {Threei} breaking over that descending line through the tops
[15:31] {Threei} SORL, this is annoying
[15:31] {Threei} we couldn't get it to break 9.40 yesterday
[15:31] {Threei} day ended with no triggering
[15:32] {Threei} or was it .36
[15:33] {larisa} I opened 1 min. it is ugly and now i see why you are arguing with me. On tick chart it is perfect trendline from 1 pm to 14:15. and your entry was first pullback after breaking downtrend . beautiful :) done with it:)
[15:34] {Threei} actually I am arguing with you becvause I like arguing... but hey :)
[15:34] {larisa} lol
[15:44] {dino} out cnw +.27
[15:45] {larisa} gj
[15:45] {dino} thx

[15:52] {Threei} so, is insane move by airlines done or frikin UAUA gapos ovwer 14 tomorrow and keeps going, lol
[15:53] {strider} Just gapped and sat there today. I wouldn't bet on another gap.
[15:53] {Les} spy finishing at new high for year. why not go higher?
[15:53] {Threei} sat there?
[15:54] {dino} look at cal
[15:54] {Threei} it went up a buck after the gap
[15:54] {dino} oil up, terror up, hmmm
[15:54] {strider} looking at a 5 min chart, looked like about .60 to me.
[15:54] {Threei} 12.87 intraday low
[15:55] {Threei} no kidding dino, this is one of the stragest things I;ve seen
[15:55] {strider} yeah. Did it mostly in the first 15 min.
[15:56] {strider} My point was just that it wasn't a continuous climber through the day.
[15:56] {strider} Got to where it was going early.
[15:57] {magoo} MOS reports after bell
[15:57] {strider} Don't know if that's relevant.
[15:57] {Threei} just in a sense of whether there was a setup to use or not
[15:57] {Threei} with this move, not really
[15:58] {dino} out bth +.22
[15:59] {larisa} I want clear answer if market is going to sell and when..
[15:59] {Threei} no it's not
[15:59] {strider} that seems only fair, larisa.
[15:59] {Threei} is "when" still relevantZ?
[15:59] {nemo} I don't think it sells until $ strengthens significantly and interest rates rise
[15:59] {dino} out apol .90, +.25
[15:59] {Threei} if so, then it's not going to sell tomorrow
[16:00] {nemo} No place else to put money
[16:00] {Threei} ot after tomorrow
[16:00] {larisa} sigh
[16:00] {Threei} from everything i SEE,
[16:00] {Threei} THIS MOVE IS NOT OVER YET
[16:01] {Les} ok night all
[16:01] {Threei} I am not even sure about dfollar nemo
[16:01] {strider} night, les.
[16:01] {Threei} I mean, it may strengthen (and I beliueve it will)
[16:01] {Threei} yet market won't budge
[16:01] {nemo} me neither, but there is no place else to put money right now
[16:01] {nemo} real estate...no
[16:02] {nemo} bonds...yeah right
[16:02] {magoo} vad, what move? the upward market trend u referring too?
[16:02] {Threei} yeah
[16:03] {larisa} too me market feels exhausted. Even with a rally yesterday. But it feels this way for a month already :)
[16:03] {Threei} it gives cracks, starts breaking... then just regains strength and continues charging
[16:03] {magoo} everybody and i mean everybody expects fall in february
[16:03] {Threei} that's eactly thwe point larisa
[16:03] {Threei} not even month,
[16:03] {Threei} it feels exhausted entrire fall
[16:03] {Threei} and just goes and goes
[16:03] {Threei} why Feb mags?
[16:03] {dino} things' been running this way since march 15th
[16:04] {Threei} I heard theories (silly ones to say honestly) about Jan, for various tax reasons
[16:04] {Threei} Feb is new for me
[16:04] {dino} but these last 2 days are a bit insane imo
[16:04] {magoo} some baloney statistic of a green first day in jan pulls for a green january, but then death
[16:04] {dino} 10-20% in days, beware a pullback of 5-10%
[16:04] {Threei} ah... okay... :)
[16:05] {Threei} I would be happy to get some serious selloff
[16:05] {Threei} would make trading so much easier
[16:05] {dino} well, told you my problem earlier
[16:05] {Threei} yeah
[16:05] {magoo} as long as we recognize it and dont fight the trend vad
[16:05] {Threei} we rarely do
[16:06] {magoo} the log in to your site is "trendfighter" hwe he
[16:06] {Threei} huh?
[16:06] {Threei} since when
[16:06] {magoo} go to site and log in lol
[16:07] {Threei} you lost me
[16:07] {Threei} but that's OK{ a lot of people lose me

Jan 04 2010

Volume improved a bit but the market stayed locked for the most part of the day which didn't provide many trading opportunities. with a few winning trades scattered here and there, stops still prevailed.

Session Time: Mon Jan 04 00:00:00 2010

[08:16] {ese} read on the weekend that there is still 3.2 trillion dollars sitting in money market funds yet to be committed to the market
[08:20] {ese} things are as they should be then.....by the time those people decide to commit....the market is at a top and then they ....welll you figure it out

[08:31] {nemo} In "Normal" times January tends to be tech sell off time
[08:38] {ese} now why is that nemo?
[08:39] {nemo} it's been a consistent cycle, likely because so much tech today is consumer related..after Xmas, time for a respite
[08:45] {ese} gotcha....makes sense
[08:49] {ese} this is the start of how many years trading Vad ?
[08:50] {Threei} 14th
[09:02] {Threei} Las Vegas Sands Corp Goldman Sachs Reinstating coverage with a Neutral rating
[09:02] {Threei} - Believes company is in a better position, both financially (leverage down to 6.4X from 10X) and from an operational perspective ($500M in cost cuts), than it was just a few quarters ago
[09:02] {Threei} - The restart of construction in Macau and the Singapore opening provide a growth path. However, the Las Vegas market faces 13% supply growth that could weigh on room rate recovery, the Singapore ramp is likely to be volatile given the phased opening, and the company still faces increasingly challenging covenant tests at the US restricted group.
[09:05] {ese} long 15 .65 vad?
[09:05] {ese} or 15.70
[09:06] {Threei} so far .65 break... but I'd really prefer the setup to form a bit later

[10:05] {dino} cagc
[10:06] {Les} ok. so one can take a shakeout as a warning of unpredictability?

[10:14] {dino} their expenses are going up huge, fuel/security, plus they never really make $ anyway
[10:14] {Threei} fern, on HIG
[10:14] {dino} would have rather obama took them over instead of autos
[10:14] {Threei} .65 or .60
[10:14] {nemo} any bets traders betting on government backstop

[14:59] {Threei} 60?
[15:00] {Threei} that's bold
[15:00] {Les} that's what my friend is betting on
[15:01] {Threei} with it being involved in this endless court war, any bet is a pure gambling on the outcome of the case
[15:01] {Les} that's what i said
[15:03] {Les} he's waiting for the "final" judgement
[15:04] {Threei} why not... as long as he a) is willing to lose most of it in case of failure and b) doesn't call it investing or trading
[15:05] {Les} he is an IT consultant, and supremely sure of his world. I cannot argue otherwise to him
[15:06] {Threei} no need
[15:06] {Threei} he either guesses right and will be firever proud of his prowess,
[15:07] {fernp} SYK 52 breakout?
[15:07] {Threei} or giesses wrong and remains convinced that he was right but some evil intruder broke the rules
[15:07] {Threei} yes fern
[15:08] {Les} understood. he also denies that small time daytrading can be profitable... so what can I say?
[15:09] {Les} we'll see who is right in a few years
[15:09] {Threei} no need to say anything
[15:09] {Threei} qwhy would you want to argue
[15:10] {Threei} if someone denies that sun rises in the morning and sets down in the evening, why argue?
[15:10] {fernp} PTEN 1:1 here
[15:10] {Threei} fern, return this profit in the market, will ya
[15:11] {Threei} day trading can't be profitrable
[15:11] {Threei} and don't even think of profiting from SYK
[15:12] {fernp} who says such thing?
[15:12] {Threei} Les's friend
[15:13] {fernp} ahhh!! he is a doctor buying stock with EOD data
[15:13] {Les} I attract all sorts
[15:13] {fernp} out SYK
[15:13] {fernp} sorry Les's friend :-)
[15:13] {Threei} not good fern... not good
[15:14] {fernp} easy oneVad
[15:21] {Threei} Rambus Inc Nasdaq to cancel certain trades of RMBS below $20.73
[15:21] {Threei} - determined to cancel all trades in security Rambus Inc. (RMBS) at or below $20.73 that were executed in NASDAQ between 13:28:00 and 13:32:00 ET. This decision cannot be appealed.
[15:23] {Threei} so, let mne get this straight
[15:23] {Threei} someone sells short at 22
[15:23] {Threei} covers at 18
[15:23] {Threei} now his cover is cancelled
[15:23] {Les} so he is left long?
[15:23] {Threei} and he is stuck with short at 22 while srtock trades at 23?
[15:24] {Threei} why long
[15:24] {Threei} it's cover that is under 20.73 so it's canceled
[15:24] {Les} sorry, you're right
[15:24] {Threei} short is what he is left with
[15:24] {Les} my clumsy description
[15:25] {Les} so someone spreading false rumours to buy up cheaper?
[15:26] {Les} or scaring to get a good short trade in...
[15:27] {Threei} if that's inded what happened, he didn't benefit much if at all
[15:29] {Threei} RIMM near lows
[15:36] {Threei} Short Setup: RIMM .90 break

[15:47] {Les} did my averaging down trick again, instead of covering. at least it was profitable
[15:47] {Threei} yikes
[15:48] {Threei} remember that confusion seemingly limited to terminology?
[15:48] {Les} too many errors today. some sleep me thinks may be in order...
[15:48] {Threei} cover sell, short, buy, bid, offer, support, resistance
[15:48] {Threei} it's not limited to terminology
[15:49] {Threei} it's lack of clarity in concepts
[15:50] {strider} holding STEC overnight, from pre-market at 17.15
[15:50] {Threei} all of it?
[15:51] {strider} good point
[15:52] {Threei} not delighted by today
[15:52] {nemo} Les' fault
[15:53] {Threei} nothing catastrophic, just usual day sprinckled with a few stops, but who said I must be delighted with stops
[15:53] {Les} no I wasn't delighted either, but I don't rack it up to lack of clarity...
[15:54] {strider} Something I've disscovered myself doing is a kind of 'picking and choosing'.......I do it by varying the share size without any reason other than lack of confidence in myself. It doesn't work very well.
[15:55] {Threei} no... there are criteria defining the share size
[15:55] {Threei} it's wired into trading system
[15:55] {Threei} start varying it for irrelevant reasons, you are messing up thew system
[15:55] {strider} I've been trading smaller share size on my trades than on yours, vad. when you have a not so great day, and I have a better day, I still loose.
[15:56] {Threei} stock liquidity, stop size
[15:56] {Threei} those are valid factors
[15:56] {nemo} time of day
[15:56] {strider} yep.
[15:56] {strider} time of day?
[15:57] {strider} that's just another way of picking and choosing, isn't it?
[15:57] {ilana} "lunchtime", right, nemo?
[15:57] {nemo} yep
[15:57] {nemo} also, trades where conviction isn't high
[15:57] {strider} If you don't have as much confidence in lunchtime, should you trade it at all.
[15:57] {strider} Well that's exactly what I'm talking about.
[15:57] {nemo} like when I like a trade and vad says "50/50"
[15:57] {strider} Less conviction.
[15:58] {fernp} im going to hold some LAMRs for tomorrow. nice daily for breakout players
[15:59] {Les} alright. will sleep on it. night all.

[15:59] {strider} terererererible
[15:59] {Threei} just not profitable
[16:00] {nemo} oy vay...your supposed to learn to trade from Vad, not spell!!

Dec 30 2009

Due to excessive fooling around, even though fun, group decided not to publish today's log. Suffice to say, two momo movers SEED and ICXT was all we found worthy to trade today. Charts are self-explanatory.
