Feb 12 2014

Can do no wrong day. Started with 1:3 GDX short, continued with win after win of various sizes and one scratch, and finishing with 1:3 FB short. Took one 7 cents stop on GLD as a sacrifice to trading gods so they wouldn't get angry with us.

There was a great educational discussion about trading goals and adjustment to the market changes in the room. Please make sure to read the log from 11:51 to 12:33.

Session Time: Wed Feb 12 00:00:00 2014

[11:39] {RonS} you had to pay?
[11:39] {munky} preferrably yes
01[11:40] {Threei}  that's a whole lot of bananas...
01[11:40] {Threei} Long Setup:  GDX  .20 break
01[11:40] {Threei}  If holds  .15
01[11:40] {Threei}  scalp only most likely
[11:42] {munky} im finding this dime/scalpers mkt very annoyinmg
[11:42] {munky} if u dont take the dime, ghoes against ya
[11:42] {munky} mkts have no power
01[11:42] {Threei}  that's why you partial
[11:42] {munky} my few best trades since room are all shorts
01[11:43] {Threei}  and we had 1:3 and 1:2 today
[11:43] {munky} but if u partial a half lot, its 25 bux
[11:43] {munky} then rest out flat
01[11:44] {Threei}  why 25?
01[11:44] {Threei}  1000 is a standard lot
[11:44] {munky} half lot 500 shares
01[11:44] {Threei}  ah
01[11:45] {Threei}  how many tardes are hl
01[11:45] {Threei}  only the most volatile ones
[11:45] {munky} just observation, shortside has bmore momo
01[11:46] {Threei}  it's just because Jan was mostly bearish
[11:46] {munky} after our first fb call, which went 1"1
01[11:46] {Threei}  different in raging bull
[11:46] {munky} it tanked
01[11:46] {Threei}  and generally, market drops faster than it climbs
[11:46] {munky} 1:7
[11:46] {munky} thats why i prefer short
[11:47] {munky} name should be shortmunky
[11:47] {munky} or munkyshort
[11:47] {munky} downmunky
[11:47] {munky} munkydwn
[11:48] {nemo} I know a headmunky
[11:48] {munky} now gdx call was short 1:4
[11:48] {munky} very nice one
[11:50] {dino} csod smr l .18 hooker
[11:50] {munky} out gdx
[11:51] {munky} room question
[11:51] {munky} whats a reasonable daily target here?
[11:52] {munky} come on guys, what is your daily goal??
[11:52] {dino} depends on stock
[11:52] {dino} ohh, $600
[11:52] {munky} no it does not
[11:52] {munky} ah, yes
[11:53] {munky} everyone else in here has no daily goal???
[11:53] {nemo} what the setups allow
[11:53] {munky} no nemo
[11:54] {nemo} personally you focus on a goal, I start taking marginal stuff to get there
[11:54] {munky} when u log in, u must think i want to achieve something
[11:54] {munky} set-ups allow where u end up
[11:54] {nemo} Honestly, I try to focus on the process and do that right
01[11:55] {Threei}  I am with nemo on this one
[11:55] {nemo} It works for others, always gets me in trouble
[11:55] {nemo} You're having a slow day as far as setups
01[11:55] {Threei}  what do you do if you are behind your goal?
[11:55] {nemo} then you start getting antsy
01[11:55] {Threei}  exactly
01[11:55] {Threei}  start taking setups that are not there?
[11:55] {nemo} I start getting that antsy feeling, I start drinking and shut down the software
01[11:56] {Threei}  do things right, money will follow
[11:56] {goinshort} I agree with you - no set goal here
[11:56] {dino} munky, its more of an average thing, i have yearly goal, monthly goal, weekly, then ave for daily
[11:56] {nemo} Munky, I'm a bit on the weird side because of what I do outside of here...so, process for me is the thing
01[11:56] {Threei}  start pushing for money, your trading becomes secondary
01[11:57] {Threei}  and that's when troubles come
[11:57] {thomcbell} yes yes
01[11:57] {Threei}  my favorite example:
[11:57] {nemo} Munkman, if it works for you, that's all that counts
[11:57] {dino} right nemo
01[11:57] {Threei}  you are on an operation table,
[11:57] {dino} thoudands of ways to do it, find your edge
[11:58] {munky} even in vads book he talks about a daily goal i think
[11:58] {thomcbell} akam still looking for short entries here
01[11:58] {Threei}  your surgeon thinks of how to perform the surgery best,
[11:58] {thomcbell} rally back up near 60.75
[11:58] {nemo} which book?
01[11:58] {Threei}  another thinks of how much he is going to be paid for the procedure.
01[11:58] {Threei}  Pick the one you want to perform on you
[11:58] {nemo} then what a dickhead his patient is
01[11:59] {Threei}  you can think of your goals when you are firmly set in your trading procedure
01[11:59] {Threei}  what setups you take, how you play them,
01[11:59] {Threei}  when your discipline becomes firmly ingrained,
01[12:00] {Threei}  becomes your second nature.
01[12:00] {Threei}  Then you can figure out your average and think of the ways to increase it,
01[12:00] {Threei}  add position size,
01[12:00] {Threei}  or tweak your procedure
01[12:00] {Threei}  with full realization that increase of profits means increase of risk.
[12:01] {nemo} Hey munkman, you ever do archery or target shooting?
[12:01] {munky} both
01[12:01] {Threei}  But start thinking of your goals and pushing for them before you master the process... you are a road kill
[12:01] {nemo} o.k., so when you start, you want to hit that bullseye, don't you?
[12:02] {nemo} want it in the 10 ring
[12:02] {nemo} your focus is on that target
[12:02] {nemo} so, you start trying to hit it
[12:03] {nemo} there's no consistency to your form perhaps
[12:03] {nemo} but, boy I want to hit that target
[12:03] {nemo} then maybe somebody starts teaching you structure
[12:03] {dino} cyno strange, big beat, revs +75% and it just sits there
[12:03] {nemo} you find out the stability of your stance is important (archery for instance) and how to build that
[12:04] {nemo} then how you draw
01[12:04] {Threei}  OK... it hurts me to admit it second time in one day... but nemo's right
[12:04] {nemo} then, if you're not using a compound bow, how to release, and consistent release using an English hold is much more complicated then one thinks
[12:05] {nemo} then of course there's the positioning of the bow at the time of release
[12:05] {nemo} sometimes you hit the bullseye, sometimes you don't
[12:06] {nemo} then one day you realize, that doing exactly the same process repeatedly makes it so you can hit the target consistently
[12:06] {nemo} What's really funny, when you get into the esoteric aspects of the art, is eventually, you actually feel the target
[12:07] {nemo} If you were to study Kyudo under a master, your first two years would be spent shooting at a blank wall
[12:07] {nemo} Why might that be?
01[12:07] {Threei}  master really hates that wall?
[12:07] {nemo} no
[12:08] {nemo} Any guesses?
[12:08] {dino} lol
[12:09] {nemo} They don't want you to be tempted by the target
[12:09] {nemo} It's all about developing the process and your relationship to the bow
[12:09] {dino} two years is longer than most of my relationships
[12:09] {nemo} does your wife know that?
[12:10] {dino} prior to her of course
[12:10] {RonS} lol
01[12:10] {Threei}  "of course?"
[12:11] {munky} well, thanx for xplaining, it makes sense
[12:12] {dino} anfi spike
[12:12] {nemo} it's kinda' esoteric, but the focus on the goal takes you out of the process
01[12:12] {Threei}  makes total sense to me
[12:12] {nemo} yeah, well, you consider me normal
01[12:13] {Threei}  which is very telling
[12:13] {nemo} damning more like it
01[12:15] {Threei}  munky... look what just happened
[12:16] {nemo} oh oh
01[12:16] {Threei}  JPM jumped 25 cents,
01[12:16] {Threei}  in much shorter time than it took it to slide
01[12:16] {Threei}  point is, things change
01[12:16] {Threei}  no pattern you notice is forever
[12:16] {nemo} just like women
01[12:17] {Threei}  thank god
[12:17] {nemo} yeah
[12:17] {munky} gotcha
[12:17] {munky} makes sense
01[12:17] {Threei}  this btw explains one phenomenon,
01[12:18] {Threei}  which anyone who traded with us long enough no doubt noticed:
01[12:18] {Threei}  we trade very consistently for a certain period of time,
01[12:18] {Threei}  hitting winning streaks lastign weeks or months, with many 100% days,
01[12:19] {Threei}  then something happens and we are having 2-3 days, or even a week of struggle
01[12:19] {Threei}  and then winning streak starts again.
01[12:19] {Threei}  What happens is:
[12:19] {nemo} vxx at pivot
01[12:19] {Threei}  we get certain marklet patterns right and start exploiting them,
01[12:19] {Threei}  and it lasts until something changes in the market,
01[12:20] {Threei}  but you rarely, if ever, can foresee the timing of the change and its exact nature,
01[12:20] {Threei}  so you simply do what you do until it stops working,
[12:20] {dino} agree
[12:20] {nemo} yeah, although Vad, you tend to consistently have an issue around standard junctures in the market
01[12:20] {Threei}  then you observe how exactly it works against you
01[12:21] {Threei}  and adjust your procedure
01[12:21] {Threei}  and winning streak starts again.
01[12:21] {Threei}  nemo... isn't it what I just said?
01[12:21] {Threei}  or you want to say that it can be foreseen, and adjustment can be taken in advance?
01[12:22] {Threei}  maybe some geniuses can.
01[12:22] {Threei}  my experience is, no
01[12:22] {Threei}  you let the market lead you
01[12:22] {Threei}  insteasd of trying to outsmart it
[12:23] {nemo} Well, Vad...I've been watching you for a while...you are pretty consistent at the standard junctures, around Memorial Day, Labor Day, etc.  Standard market season junctures, then a coupla' more thrown in for good measure
01[12:23] {Threei}  so, can you foresee the exact nature of change?
[12:23] {nemo} Put it this way...I have a pretty good idea when we should keep the bananas away from you
01[12:24] {Threei}  how exactly should we change our procedure?
[12:24] {nemo} No, I wouldn't change it...I'm just saying you are consistent
01[12:24] {Threei}  ok... let's try and implement this then
01[12:24] {Threei}  necxt time you feel it's coming, alert us
[12:24] {thomcbell} selling another 1/4 here kog 11.70
[12:24] {nemo} o.k
[12:25] {nemo} just remember...no bananas
01[12:25] {Threei}  I will continue doing what I do, but those who want to follow your idea may cut position size in half,
01[12:25] {Threei}  or paper trade for a day or two
01[12:25] {Threei}  and we will test whether it helps with transition
01[12:25] {Threei}  If so, we will incorporate it in our approach
01[12:25] {Threei}  deal?
[12:26] {nemo} not really, actually I think it would be harmful...my point is your consistency
01[12:26] {Threei}  yes but my point is,
[12:26] {nemo} I don't think we can make it better
01[12:26] {Threei}  if you can consistently predict when I am going to his a snag,
01[12:26] {Threei}  why not cut down our activity at that point?
01[12:26] {Threei}  his = hit
[12:27] {nemo} I would be concerned about trying to make the sword too sharp
[12:27] {munky} which shows here the pressure vad is under
[12:27] {munky} he puts it out there
[12:27] {nemo} He's very consistent
[12:28] {munky} only compliment im giving u this week
[12:28] {nemo} I'm just telling what I've seen...I don't mess with his system
01[12:28] {Threei}  habing logs published for so many years, I doesn't feel like pressure anymore... it used to
01[12:29] {Threei}  kind of git used to it I guess :)
[12:29] {nemo} Now, I'll mention if I think I'm seeing that period, just as I would say to myself or have to Dino or others it might be time to ease up for a bit...but that's it
01[12:30] {Threei}  right
01[12:30] {Threei}  anyway, we wull test it
[12:30] {nemo} I watched Vad have no losing days through a two month stretch in the Fall of 2008 when the market was falling apart
01[12:30] {Threei}  no immediate change until and unless it proves itself two-three times
01[12:30] {Threei}  oh, Iove panicking markets...
01[12:31] {Threei}  munky would, too
[12:31] {nemo} Then I think you had one down day, and then another streak into the beginning of 2009
[12:31] {dino} fwiw nemo, you call turns pretty well in advance
01[12:31] {Threei}  moves are large and fast
[12:31] {nemo} Funny as hell
[12:31] {nemo} One Day Vad is otherworldly in his calls

[12:31] {nemo} I dcc him, "WTF setup was that?"
[12:32] {nemo} he says, "I don't know, it just felt up."
[12:32] {nemo} which frankly brings us back to that conversation about process
[12:32] {nemo} That last call was pure art...that's where focus on the process brings you
[12:33] {nemo} That's the real goal
[12:33] {nemo} The ART of Trading
06[12:34] * nemo "now...where's my paint-by-numbers trading kit"
