Mar 18 2010

It's official: 5-and-half weeks long winning streak has ended today. Morning brought three rinses - stock would touch our stop, then proceed to our target. Discipline trumps conviction. Later on SOMX momo allowed many of us to dig out of it but calls wise it's still a losing day. Read the discussion of how to play momos, starting around 15:14

[08:53] {Threei} Notes the rift with Germany over the debt crisis is deepening
[08:55] {nemo} I love Germany pushing IMF option. It's another way of saying, "We'll let the US pay for it."
[08:55] {Threei} pretty much
[08:55] {Threei} well, both countries have taxpayers
[08:56] {Threei} none is happy to bail out Greece
[08:56] {Threei} who has more at stake
[08:56] {nemo} EU
[08:56] {Les} why not? US has screwed its dollar with the printing press, another trillion won't do greater harm?
[08:56] {Threei} and who can control their internal situation better
[08:56] {Threei} I don't think so les...
[08:56] {nemo} Les, that's more debt I incur
[08:57] {Les} give the cash to us, I'll put it to good use
[08:57] {Threei} patience wears thin here with bailing out US's own,
[08:57] {Threei} let alone someone else
[08:57] {Les} betting againts Dino does get expensive
[08:57] {Les} against
[08:57] {Les} :D morning
[08:57] {Threei} hi
[08:57] {Threei} don't et against him...
[08:58] {Threei} he has very nice track record of consistency
[09:00] {Threei} all in all, I will be very surprized if IMF takes this burden
[09:01] {Threei} just can't envision any palatable way to sell bailing out Greece to US public
[09:01] {nemo} not sure, might be blackmail to keep buying trasuries
[09:02] {Les} well, immediate bailout is one issue, but am happy to see policy reform pan-EU as necessary outcome long term
[09:03] {Les} an unstable EU ain't going to help Switzerland
[09:03] {Threei} feels to me like band-aid on tumor les...
[09:04] {Threei} I don't see EU problem in unsound financing or monetary policies
[09:04] {nemo} Greece has the EU by the short-hairs
[09:04] {Threei} that exists but it's just a small part of the problem
[09:04] {nemo} Now...can the EU convince the IMF (US) those are their shorthairs too
[09:05] {Threei} underlying and the most serious one is that the very construct is artifical
[09:05] {nemo} understood
[09:05] {Threei} and has internal contradictions that sooner or later will tear it apart
[09:06] {Les} not agreed
[09:06] {Threei} not many in Europe do :)

[09:06] {Threei} but, why argue
[09:07] {nemo} what will be, will be
[09:07] {Threei} I am sure it will resolve itself in our lifetime
[09:07] {Threei} let's wait and see
[09:07] {nemo} whoa..
[09:07] {Threei} personal experience is,
[09:08] {nemo} the doctor is in
[09:08] {Threei} when this kind of things starts unravelling, it happens with mind-boggling speed
[09:08] {Threei} exceeding anything anyone could imagine
[09:09] {Threei} maybe there were geniuses that foresaw the speed of USSR collapse,
[09:09] {Threei} but within it I am sure there was none.
[09:09] {Threei} The system was rotten, sure,
[09:09] {Threei} a lot of people saw that
[09:09] {Threei} but no one forecasted that it could fall apart in the course of months
[09:09] {Threei} not even close
[09:10] {Threei} GE) German Gov't advisor: Germany position towards Greece remained unchanged
[09:12] {Threei} - reiterates Greece has not requested any aid.
[09:12] {Les} March 18 (Bloomberg) -- Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou set a one-week deadline for the European Union to craft a financial aid mechanism for Greece, challenging Germany to give up its doubts about a rescue package.

[14:12] {Threei} Alan Greenspan traces housing bubble to collapse of the Soviet Union
[14:12] {Threei} The fall of the Soviet Union led to hundreds of millions of workers entering the global marketplace, he said in a paper to be presented to a Brookings Institution conference.
[14:12] {Threei} This new market-based workforce, Mr. Greenspan said, helped push up growth in the developing world. This in turn fueled a global savings glut that drove down long-term interest rates, leading to an unsustainable boom in house prices, he said.

[15:12] {Threei} well... 51/49
[15:12] {jfjf64} half out
[15:12] {Threei} if it fizzles out, it will pull back deeply,
[15:12] {jfjf64} was 2cents from being stoped
[15:13] {Threei} probably to around 6.60 or so, befofe bounce becomes more or less safe bet
[15:13] {Les} went long, lost on pullback here, don't like it. waiting for short opp.
[15:14] {Threei} don't by breakouts on momos
[15:14] {Threei} pullbacks only
[15:14] {Threei} breakouts work in early stage of momo movement only
[15:14] {Les} ok
[15:14] {jfjf64} all out
[15:14] {Threei} do this Les
[15:15] {Threei} when next momo comes around,
[15:15] {Threei} observe it from this point of view,
[15:15] {Threei} comparing breakouts and pullbacks
[15:15] {Threei} you'll get a good feel for this phenomenon,
[15:15] {Threei} how at the early stages breaks work nicely,
[15:15] {Threei} then each break becomes a trap,
[15:16] {Threei} while pullback entries work
[15:16] {Les} done
[15:19] {Threei} see the way it advances?
[15:19] {Threei} if you buy pullback, you can score, let's say 20 cents on a jump ober the next resistance
[15:20] {Les} l .37
[15:20] {Les} out +.10
[15:20] {Threei} but if you buy break of that same resistance, you may gewwt 5 cents, then it pulls back 15-20
[15:26] {Les} not shortable
[15:28] {Threei} see how 8 buyers get trapped?
[15:28] {Threei} and one more thing,
[15:29] {Threei} as you watch 8 scrolling,
[15:29] {Les} y
[15:29] {Threei} feel the strong temptation to join in?
[15:29] {Les} been there, done that
[15:30] {Threei} that's something to think about
[15:30] {Threei} this is your window into minds of others
[15:30] {Threei} if you feel this strong urge - this is what crowds feel
[15:30] {Threei} they act on this impulse,
[15:30] {Threei} and this is excatly the wrong thing to do
[15:31] {Threei} use your own emotions as a window into the collective mind of the crowd
[15:32] {Threei} now as early 8 bueyers got scared and shaken out by fast and furious drop, it returns back to 8
[15:32] {Threei} rewarding pullback buyers
[15:34] {fernp} good observation Vad ty :-)
[15:35] {Threei} always... if not profits, I can at least provide some educational value on a day when I can't trade my way out of wet paper bag

Mar 17 2010

Interesting day, with a few stops and a lot more wins. What made it different is a big variety of plays: longs and shorts, small scalps and bigger plays, badly beaten cheapies like FUQI and expensive high-fliers like POT. All in all, fun and profit.

[14:05] {Threei} neither did I but I had to show Les that he did it wrong before :)
[14:06] {fernp} lol
[14:06] {Threei} magoo is preparing surprise party for dino?
[14:10] {Les} Is there a crime victim compensation committee I can appeal to in Canada?
[14:10] {Threei} hmmm
[14:10] {Threei} not sure
[14:10] {nemo} somebody steal your common sense?
[14:11] {Threei} I guess it's usual court process
[14:11] {Threei} with seeking punitive damages
[14:11] {Les} I'm clearly a victim here
[14:11] {Threei} lol... les, give it to nemo, he recovered from a blunder before
[14:12] {Les} oh no, I'm pretending Nemo didn't say that
[14:12] {nemo} o.k. Alice
[14:13] {Threei} that's osrtich policy
[14:13] {Threei} works well only if you don't have concrete floors
[14:13] {Threei} also, trust me:
[14:13] {nemo} fcx break of .56 on volume?
[14:13] {nemo} stop is wide
[14:13] {Threei} years of attempts to deal with nemo by pretending I don't notice him proved it's not working
[14:14] {Threei} he has no problem waiting it out
[14:14] {Les} still, you don't need to encourage him
[14:14] {Threei} I don't need to but it's fun...
[14:14] {nemo} Les....................I don't need encouragement...trust me...........you give me all the motivation I need
[14:14] {Threei} and the worst part is: he is doing just fine with no slightest encouragment
[14:15] {larisa} I say no more than 10 min a day of Les sarcasm. new rule.
[14:15] {Les} haha
[14:15] {nemo} Crissakes, he would have to shut up by 8:15
[14:15] {Threei} ok... my quota for the day is filled then
[14:15] {Threei} FUQI 1:1
[14:15] {Les} that's alright Larisa, I do enjoy self-deprecation
[14:15] {Threei} wait
[14:16] {larisa} but I am getting tired :)
[14:16] {Les} oh
[14:16] {Les} sorry
[14:16] {Threei} larisa meant sarcasm BY Les or sarcasm ABOUT les?
[14:16] {larisa} about les
[14:16] {Threei} oh, OK
[14:16] {nemo} fine, we'll fawn all over him
[14:16] {Les} voilà Nemo, you heard the woman
[14:16] {Threei} anyone took FUQI?
[14:17] {Threei} flawless trade
[14:17] {nemo} look at fcx Vad
[14:17] {Les} half out +.08
[14:17] {Threei} why?
[14:17] {Threei} what do you see there?
[14:17] {dino} .
[14:17] {Threei} stop to under .10 les, if you are partialing
[14:17] {nemo} the resistance at .55, and it's due for a run
[14:17] {Les} moving averages
[14:17] {Les} fuqi has cleared both
[14:18] {Les} with great difficulty
[14:18] {Les} 50/200
[14:19] {Threei} nemo, only if market makes another, and sizeable, move
[14:19] {Threei} I a, not delighted by how FCX sits good 50 cents under day's high while market makes new ones
[14:19] {Threei} next exit for FUQI is about .35
[14:20] {Threei} and last one is .45
[14:21] {fernp} STI .40 break, Vad?
[14:21] {Les} ok ty
[14:21] {Threei} probably, with market making new high
[14:21] {fernp} ty
[14:22] {Les} ok all out.
[14:23] {Threei} why??
[14:23] {Threei} stop is practically breakeven
[14:23] {Threei} stock finally found firm footing
[14:23] {nemo} Vad, if fcx holds .42 in this pullback, that's the right side if IH&S
[14:23] {nemo} think FUQI would be a new break on consolidation and then move above .28
[14:24] {Threei} don't know about FCX...
[14:25] {Les} cause a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush
[14:25] {Les} any sign of weakness, I'm happy to offload
[14:27] {Threei} well, as a naturtal born scalper I would be the last to argue with that
[14:27] {Threei} but this case does deserve more room

[16:00] {larisa} oscillator will fall anyway most likely.

[16:00] {Threei} so consolidation liquidates overbought condition
[16:00] {RonS} cya all.
[16:00] {Threei} and price can continue higher again, becoming overrbought again
[16:01] {Threei} and overboghter still

Mar 16 2010

Not too many trades as we retreated into inactivity closer to FOMC time. Profits are steady though: one stop on RIMM, profitable trades on FCX, WATG, UAUA and a few discretionary ones. Swing entry from yesterday on VISN worked too.

[08:42] {strider} I agree.
[08:42] {Threei} meaning, I wouldn't dump it into smallish gap
[08:43] {strider} yeah. thx.
[08:43] {Threei} just manage risk according to YOUR specuifications, not mine :)

Prior to this regulatory action, our plan had been to follow the original NDA for AFREZZA with another regulatory submission for our next-generation inhaler rather than launch AFREZZA with the MedTone device. We intend to discuss with the FDA whether it is appropriate to address the agencys requests using what would otherwise have been a supplemental NDA submission. If this approach is acceptable, we believe that this regulatory action may not have a significant impact on the timing of the commercial launch of AFREZZA, which would not have occurred until at least 2011 in any event."

[13:12] {Threei} Preview: FOMC rate decision due out around 14:15ET
[13:12] {Threei} ***The FOMC is expected to hold rates again today and will likely maintain its "extended period" language after making two significant adjustments since the last meeting. First, at the Jan 27 meeting, Kansas City Fed President Thomas Hoenig raised a dissent against the "extended period" language, stating that economic and financial conditions have improved enough that language was no longer warranted. Then on Feb 18, the Fed raised the Discount rate 25 bps to 0.75%, but couched it as a move toward "normalization" that does not reflect a change in policy outlook. Its likely the FOMC is allowing these changes to sink in and won't move again so soon, particularly as economic over the last six weeks has been tepid.

[14:14] {Threei} - Vote 9-1; Hoenig dissents, feels language on extended period could cause imbalances

[14:36] {Threei} Comparative analysis of current vs Jan 27 FOMC statements: maintains "extended period" language, vote again 9-1; minor revisions on labor market; adds that it will use policy tools as needed
[14:36] {Threei} - the economy statement reiterates that "economic activity has continued to strengthen' but mildly revises the outlook for jobs stating "the labor market is stabilizing" (revised from "the deterioration in the labor market is abating"). Another minor revision is a nod toward the commercial real estate market, with the new statement noting "investment in nonresidential structures is declining (adding the word 'nonresidential'). Reiterates that household spending is expanding at a moderate rate but remains constrained, but adds a note that "high unemployment" (revised from "a weak labor market") is one constraint. The statement still sees business activity picking up in some sectors and reiterates "employers remain reluctant to add to payrolls." Reiterates that " the pace of economic recovery is likely to be moderate for a time."
[14:36] {Threei} The inflation statement is unaltered: "With substantial resource slack continuing to restrain cost pressures and with longer-term inflation expectations stable, inflation is likely to be subdued for some time."
[14:36] {Threei} Reiterates expectation for "exceptionally low levels of the federal funds rate for an extended period" due to subdued inflation trends and low rates of resource utilization. On securites purchasing programs, the FOMC now states that "The Committee will continue to monitor the economic outlook and financial developments and will employ its policy tools as necessary to promote economic recovery and price stability" (revised from " will continue to evaluate its purchases of securities in light of the evolving economic outlook and conditions in financial markets). The statement does not alter timing on the wind down of existing liquidity programs, noting "The only remaining such program, the Term Asset-Backed Securities Loan Facility, is scheduled to close on June 30 ."
