Feb 12 2013

Interesting day for us - first one in almost 3 weeks where we haven't finished in black. Not unhappy with it though - we started with solidly red morning, and then methodically and carefully clawed our way back in to flat or just very slightly in red. Can't win them all so gotta make sure you handle losing days right - in cold blood, minimizing damage and making sure there is no lasting scars. Tomorrow is a new day.

Session Time: Tue Feb 12 00:00:00 2013

[12:44] {dptl} hmm..just looking for the set ups
01[12:44] {Threei}  you know very well how it ends when you start jumping from one to another, just to do something
01[12:45] {Threei}  most of those you look at have none
01[12:45] {Threei}  or have very low volume
01[12:45] {Threei}  or very narrow range
01[12:45] {Threei}  or too wide spreads and tiny sizes
01[12:45] {Threei}  be more picky

01[12:49] {Threei}  no survival skills for Siberia
[12:49] {dino} dp, for most part noon until 1 pm est sucks for trades
[12:52] {nemo} hah, love this:  "One of the tests is they make you dive to the bottom of a pool and tie five knots," the Shooter says. "One guy got to the fifth knot and blacked out underwater. We pulled him up and he was, like, dead. They made the class face the fence while they tried to resuscitate him. The first words as he spit out water were 'Did I pass? Did I tie the fifth knot?' The instructor
[12:52] {nemo} told him, 'We didn't want to find out if you could tie the knots, you asshole, we wanted to know how hard you'd push yourself. You killed yourself. You passed.'"
[12:52] {dino} lol
01[12:52] {Threei}  sheesh
01[12:52] {Threei}  lol
[12:55] {nemo} love this part too: It is important to him to stress that no women or children were killed in that raid. He also insists that when it came to interrogation, repetitive questioning and leveraging fear was as aggressive as he'd go. "When we first started the war in Iraq, we were using Metallica music to soften people up before we interrogated them," the Shooter says. "Metallica got wind of
[12:55] {nemo} this and they said, 'Hey, please don't use our music because we don't want to promote violence.' I thought, Dude, you have an album called Kill 'Em All.
01[12:55] {Threei}  heh
01[12:56] {Threei}  decide if you want to sell second half at 1:2 or 1/4
01[12:56] {Threei}  very hard to tell how big of a chance it has to proceed to 1:3
01[12:56] {Threei}  so, how about this:
01[12:57] {Threei}  if selling half makes you flat for the day, do it,
[12:57] {nemo} frickin' VXX just dying
01[12:57] {Threei}  if not yet, sell 1/4 and push for more,
01[12:57] {Threei}  after all we are playing with house money on this trade now
01[12:58] {Threei}  by the way guys, a suggestion and a question
01[12:58] {Threei}  that last week discussion about money management and blog post on it that I linked later on,
01[12:59] {Threei}  do make sure that you read the whole set of articles in the blog, they highlight various aspects of trading approach that we use regularly but rarely discuss,
01[12:59] {Threei}  simply because I take it for granted
01[12:59] {Threei}  and assume that you read the whole thing
01[12:59] {Threei}  so make sure you did.
01[13:00] {Threei}  Now, question
01[13:00] {Threei}  if there are some aspects that require detailed discussion and I failed to write anything about it, point them out
[13:02] {ese} dino.......you were right about it pausing AKAM that is at 36.42

01[13:04] {Threei}  yeah
[13:06] {nemo} like this one:  Even in action, with all their high state of expertise and readiness, "we're normal people. We fall off ladders, land on the wrong roof, get bitten by dogs." In Iraq, a breacher was putting a charge on a door to blow it off its hinges when he mistakenly leaned against the doorbell. He quickly took off the charge and the target opened the door. We were like, "You rang the
[13:06] {nemo} fucking doorbell?!" Maybe we should try that more often, the Shooter thought to himself.

[13:23] {dptl} DB sizes are looks almost the same to mee
01[13:23] {Threei}  spread is generally better, gap between levels is tighter
01[13:23] {Threei}  you don't see how much more dense level 2 is on CLH vs DB?

Nemo's Findings week of 2/10/2013

(Course on chart pattern recognition is available now: http://www.realitytrader.com/111trades.html

WOW!  Amazing I have had time to do this entry considering the time and effort it has taken to wreak havoc in the Northeast....;-)

Economically, not much has changed.  All the indexes continue their steady ascent.  Bad news is bought,  good news bought more. "BTFD!"  is in full force.  Notice how the majority of stocks that sell off on earnings news and guidance react?  The vast majority of them are bought off their morning sell-off. That's strength.  The only clouds readily visible on the horizon is the "Sequester" and perhaps the nascent ascent of gasoline, traditional for this time of year.  Gasoline is at it's highest price ever for this time of year.  How high does it have to go to start dampening the market?  Anyway, the week that was:

Btw...the "pink" lines and boxes are daily ranges I put in the previous night that demarcate levels for the day I think may be important.  They incorporate the daily Pivot levels that do not appear on  Freestockcharts until the next day.  Also, the data I use in my pivot tables sometimes varies slightly from that of FSC, so it creates a fuzzy range.  Also, as someone noted, and I paraphrase.

You can have a line every 10 cents, so every price is a level.

Of course, there is some truth to the statement, depending on the time-frame.  For instance, on a daily basis, the shorter term pivot levels, especially the dailies are much more relevant.  But, if you were to look at the SPY for instance and were tracking my weekly entries, among all the other lines, you would notice that the Semesterly R1 became relevant on January 23rd, and has been relevant ever since.  Arguably the the same level on the IWM has also become relevant.  The point of the analysis is to notice what becomes relevant.  Should the market retrace, the interaction of future, shorter term levels with the Semesterly R1, may indicate additional strength or weakness probabilities for the level, which then gives you a higher probability decision point. Of course someone could say, "Why don't you just draw a line at the level?"  Well, in a sense you do.  When there is price support/resistance at a level, we manually draw a line demarcating it as such.  When it coincides with a longer term pivot level, it becomes, drum roll please...........confluence, which means you now have pivot traders, and price level traders, looking at it.  When you have multiple time frames, price levels and perhaps fib. levels all coinciding in a tight range, then you have multiple types of traders all seeing that level as important.  Heisenberg strikes again.

On that note, the week that is:

Market Week Wrap-up

European Issues Return to Center Stage, but Risk-on Blizzard Continues

- Giddy global equity markets continued to push out to fresh post-crisis highs this week. There were some hiccups of risk aversion thanks to an unfolding political scandal in Spain and Berlusconi's gains in the polls ahead of the Italian elections on February 24th. In addition, perceptions that ECB's Draghi was excessively dovish in his post-ECB rate decision press conference provided some turbulence in EUR/USD that spilled over into equity markets on Thursday. However the issues provided no more than passing blocks to ever stronger rotation into risk assets. On Friday, markets pushed higher thanks to better Chinese and US trade data. China January trade data showed a much greater than expected pickup in exports, while the December trade deficit narrowed much more than expected, plunging by over $10B to a three-year low of $38.5B. Friday also saw a breakthrough in EU budget talks, with leaders agreeing to a tentative 7-year spending plan coming in under €1T but still promoting some growth initiatives. Ominous rumblings of geopolitical trouble were in the background: Japan accused China of more serious provocations over disputed island territories, North Korea was observed preparing for nuclear tests and Iran called off fresh negotiations over its nuclear program only a day after agreeing to them. For the week, the DJIA rose 0.1% and the S&P 500 gained 0.3%, while the Nasdaq added 0.5%, coming within points of a fresh 12-year high.

- State and federal regulators announced their intention to prosecute ratings agency Standard & Poors for its part in the excesses in the housing bubble that lead to the 2008 financial crisis. On Tuesday, the DoJ said it would file civil charges in cooperation with 16 states against S&P after ongoing settlement negotiations with the company fell apart. In a separate effort, reports suggested the New York State has subpoenaed S&P and formally requested information from Moody's and Fitch to examine ratings they issued in the run-up to the crisis. Unlike the existing federal/state probes, the NY AG can sue under the state's Martin Act, which does not require prosecutors to prove a firm intended to defraud investors to win a case.

- Notable European earnings this week included BP and UBS. BP's Q4 profit fell nearly 80%, dragged down by payouts related to the Macondo oil spill. The company booked a $3.8B loss for its settlement of criminal charges. UBS posted a $2.1B loss for Q4 in the wake of lawsuits, the LIBOR scandal and a wave of restructuring.

- New and old media names offered contrasting quarterly reports. Disney's earnings fell 6% y/y as ESPN absorbed higher programming costs and the performance of its movie studio sagged. AOL beat top and bottom line targets on solid growth. Analysts cite the 13% gain in advertising revenue as a major positive result, although the bulk of the firm's profits are still coming from membership revenue.

- Fast food stocks were burned by developments in Asia. Yum Brands' Q4 numbers were solid, but the firm warned its outlook has turned very sour on adverse publicity from contaminated poultry supplies in its China business. In the current Q1, Yum expects China KFC sales comps -25% y/y. McDonald's January sales comps were negative, as the company had warned with earnings two weeks ago. The company's terrible -9.5% comp in Asia was due in part to the timing of Chinese New Year and the impact of the tainted fast food chicken scandal there.

- On the M&A front, Michael Dell and Silver Lake Partners formally outlined their $24B going-private deal for Dell Computer, worth $13.65/share. Some large shareholders immediately objected to the slim premium on the deal. Oracle clinched a deal to acquire Acme Packet for $29.25/share in cash, in a deal valued at $1.7B. Oracle emphasized that the firm's network management solutions would help the company transition to all-IP data delivery.

- After peaking above 1.3700 late last week, EUR/USD turned around and gapped lower this week. Over the weekend, damning details from the unfolding Spanish political scandal circulated in the press, implicating PM Rajoy and other leading government officials in a slush fund scheme. Meanwhile Italian polls showed former PM Berlusconi's gaining on the various left-wing parties ahead of elections coming up in two weeks. Berlusconi made waves after promising to roll back and rebate certain taxes implemented by Monti's government. Peripheral bond yields widened out, with the Spain 10-year yield moving above 5.4% and Italian 10-year yields topped 4.5%, both back at highs last seen in early December. EUR/USD closed out the week just above 1.3350.

- The biggest leg down in EUR/USD arrived over the course of the ECB post rate decision press conference. Rates were on hold, as expected, and President Draghi began his remarks by reiterating his usual comments, including that the bank still sees downside risks for the economy. He also said the ECB would maintain a full allotment of MROs. Draghi acknowledge the stronger euro, but said it was still unclear whether the appreciation would be sustained. The dovish tone was taken as a reason to sell.

- The weak yen trend continued apace through midweek, with USD/JPY testing the 94 handle for fresh 33-month lows. USD/JPY has weakened over 7.5% in 2013 so far, and EUR/JPY found its way above 127 this week. Finance Minister Aso commented that ending the yen's long uptrend remained a top priority for the government, suggesting the currency's recent weakening had not satisfied the nation's leadership. BoJ Governor Shirakawa said he would step down three weeks earlier than expected to coincide with departure of two deputy members, a move which would most likely move forward an anticipated shift to more aggressive monetary easing by Abe's yet to be named choice to helm the BOJ. The yen strengthened slightly after Aso was cited as saying the currency had weakened too quickly, however the ministry later clarified that Aso's remarks had been mistranslated.

- UK markets were volatile as BoE Governor-Designate Carney addressed Parliament for the first time. Carney's tone was more hawkish compared to his remarks at Davos two weeks ago. GBP/USD surged 100 pips after Carney said the BoE must exit its unconventional policy. Gilt yields moved higher and tested 2.14%. The BoE issued a rare statement following its rate decision noting that inflation would exceed 2% for the next two years and the MPC stood ready to provide further stimulus if warranted.
