June 10 2013

A few nice plays, particularly IWM 1:4 catch, but overall, a lot of rinses, shakeouts and invalidations that left us in the red. See-saw Monday.

Session Time: Mon Jun 10 00:00:00 2013

[08:37] {nemo} Always look on the bright side of life...dada...dada...dadadadadada
[08:49] {nemo} UPRO split so will likely be more liquid to trade
[08:50] {dino} gm
01[08:50] {&Threei}  morning dino
[08:55] {nemo} dino, plug the market back in, will you
[08:56] {+cc_9} Morning gents
[08:56] {nemo} see they split UPRO 9?
[08:58] {stevw} nemo, i thought your line from that song would be "life's a piece of s**t, when you look at it"
[08:59] {nemo} I step out of character on occasion
[09:00] {stevw} no problem, we still have some crosses left
01[09:00] {&Threei}  cc9, stev :)
[09:00] {jdetente} Good morning...
01[09:00] {&Threei}  jd :)
[09:02] {nemo} Yes the Crack Suicide Cross of The People's Front of Judea, or was that the Judean People's Front?
[09:02] {stevw} serious question - what the heck is that premarket spread in GIL?
[09:02] {stevw} absolutely love the political and religious satire!!
[09:02] {nemo} why look?
[09:03] {stevw} i'm just curious how you get a $4.31 bid against a $44 offer
[09:03] {stevw} i accidentally typed the ticker symbol, actually
[09:04] {cipher} gm
01[09:04] {&Threei}  cipher :)
[09:08] {stevw} btw, i have a public service announcement for all canadians on the board
01[09:08] {&Threei}  loonie is no more?
[09:09] {stevw} no such luck - it's about my banking woes from last week
[09:09] {stevw} TD bank accidentally attached my ex-wife's account to my ATM card, 10 years after we had separated
01[09:09] {&Threei}  wow
[09:09] {stevw} my ATM deposits and withdrawals were going through her chequing account not mine
[09:10] {nemo} Can you sit down without pain?
[09:10] {stevw} and they say they're only responsible for things I catch within 30 days
[09:10] {nemo} talk to a lawyer
[09:10] {stevw} they're not responsible for what they did if it's older than 30 days
01[09:10] {&Threei}  that's pure unadeltered bs
[09:10] {_epach} morning
01[09:11] {&Threei}  morning epach
[09:11] {nemo} tardes
01[09:11] {&Threei}  they charged me for an account that turned out to be under their condition to be free, for about 7 years
[09:11] {stevw} i'll get it sorted somehow, but it's an alert to be vigilant with your banking records even or especially in this electronic age
01[09:11] {&Threei}  I phoned, asked to rfeturn the money
01[09:11] {&Threei}  they gave me this 30 days bs,
01[09:11] {&Threei}  I politely asked:
[09:12] {Alexs} gm
01[09:13] {&Threei}  do you mean to tell me that by your rules if I don't catch your error in time, my money somehow become yours, and you can dance "slipped one by him" dance? Us that what I quote on social medias, paper etc?
01[09:13] {&Threei}  alex :)
01[09:13] {&Threei}  she said "I'll be back with you in 2 min"
[09:13] {stevw} don't you love how they assume all the power and authority, but bugger all responsibility
01[09:14] {&Threei}  and returned advicing me in exctited tone that they reimburse whole 15 years of 14.99 monthly fee
[09:14] {_richa} If it would have been the other way around they would go back and correct it
[09:14] {stevw} rest assured i'll be having that type of discussion with the branch manager as a next step
01[09:14] {&Threei}  they did so within 1 hour
[09:15] {Will49} gm
01[09:15] {&Threei}  will :)
[09:15] {dino} gl stevw
[09:16] {jdetente} that's quite a quick change of tone on their part Vad. Scared the hell out of them I bet

01[09:17] {&Threei}  I geared up for a long battle with all levels of reps and supervisors
01[09:17] {&Threei}  bman :)
[09:17] {stevw} i need to adopt a russian accent and a beard maybe
01[09:17] {&Threei}  lol
[09:17] {jdetente} don't forget the pipe
01[09:17] {&Threei}  it was during that royal bank fiasco btw...
[09:17] {stevw} mmm, maybe not the pipe for the effect needed
[09:17] {Les} ...speaking of fiascos

[09:18] {stevw} interesting entrance, les
[09:18] {robbers} I had the same situation, Vad, with SunTrust Bank and they reimbursed me.  But I had to get tough with them, LOL.

01[09:18] {&Threei}  rofl!
[09:19] {robbers} LOL.  No, they wouldn't have done it in that case.  Very funny.
[09:19] {Will49} good one stev

01[09:20] {&Threei}  happens to me rgularly, and I switch to using nemo's
01[09:20] {&Threei}  that's why he looks so witless sometimes

01[10:03] {&Threei}  yes but he said nothing resolute
01[10:03] {&Threei}  repetition of all "one side, on another side"
01[10:04] {&Threei}  (US) Fed's Bullard (moderate, FOMC voter): Weak inflation data could possibly argue for prolonging QE asset purchases; monetary policy is being buffeted by better growth and weaker inflation- Labor market has been improving since summer 2012. - Inflation is low due to soft commodity prices, weaker European and China economic growth. - US economic growth has not been spectacular. - There are few signs that Fed monetary policy moves are unsettling financial markets.

[15:41] {nemo} look at volumes and the ATRs of the indices
[15:42] {nemo} What's interesting about these days, is you can see that it's mostly machines at work.  Long and short setups appear, they sense the order flow, and go the other way to bust the stops, at least in the indexes
[15:42] {Will49} they surely did that today
[15:43] {nemo} SPY volume is about 80 mil, 20 day average is 148 mil, 65 day average 129.5 mil

01[15:45] {&Threei}  sure
01[15:45] {&Threei}  and those that were nicely readable were still a bit differrnt from the rest of the year
01[15:46] {&Threei}  I guess I don't pay much attention to these things anynore because change is constant... it's an essence of the trading process
01[15:48] {&Threei}  after all this back and forth we are finishing about flat?

Nemo's Findings: week of 6/9/2013

(Course on chart pattern recognition is available now: http://www.realitytrader.com/111trades.html

Correction?  WHAT CORRECTION!!!  The old, "We will rebuild meme."

Well isn't this special.  Frankly no surprise, everything working out to Wall Street's evil plan.  Remember last week when I said SPY had a gap below 161, but the 50 day SMA was rising into the gap?  Well, that's where we bottomed on Thursday, well $.20 below it but it was for less than 1 minute. We then proceeded up finishing near the high producing the bullish "piercing pattern" on the indices:

Then I said to myself, "Nemo, where do you think they'll go tomorrow?", "tomorrow" being Friday.  So, I looked at this:

As you can see, the indexes finished Thursday on their highs, with the Monthly Pivot on the SPY dead ahead.  Even though I track the Monthly levels, I tend to give the Weekly levels, thus the Weekly Pivot more weight.  That's kinda' where they went.  Now here's another interesting tidbit.  I shot off my mouth in Vad's room as the indices were coming in Friday afternoon:

[14:08] {Les} SPY at tpotential breakdown level
[14:09] {Les} short iwm .98
[14:09] {Les} holding .10
[14:09] {nemo} I don't expect it to hold below 163.80

I was referring to SPY holding below 163.80.  Nevermind Les, he's...he's...ahhh...err... as I said, nevermind.

Anyway, why did I think that?  Well,   look at the SPY chart above.  Notice the yellow horizontal line, well that corresponds to the 8 ema.  That level is important to many a swing trader as to when to get in or get out of a stock.  So, if Wall Street wants to keep you believing we're still bullish, they would want to keep it at that level.  So, I was tracking the value when SPY bottomed Friday afternoon at 163.74.  Whaddya' think the 8 ema was....mmmmmmmhhhhh....'nuff said. So if the evil trolls in southern Manhattan want to keep you in the game, they had to keep it above that.  Why scare all the sheep...er...investors over the weekend.  As well, they were kind enough to assault the highs again in the waning minutes.  Here's what you didn't see after the close on Friday:

As you can see we had a little "oopsie!" after the close.  It doesn't mean anything specifically for Monday, but some profits were taken in the aftermarket, which has been a change of character over the last couple of weeks.  So, something to keep in mind.  Not really making any predictions, but there is no reason for the market not to go back and test the previous highs.  The $165.60 area looks a bit sticky if we don't vault over them on the Monday open.   There is no reason for the market not to go down either.  News out of Asia, or Europe could sway us.  We are likely to be in a consolidation range because of the approaching Summer, at least until earnings season begins to show it's hand.  Unless of course, there is significant degradation in the macro-economic environment, or a large meteorite.

Anyway, the week that was:

Kinda' looks like spy (bottom right) is forming a big cup and handle

The week that is:

Geez...cup and handles on FAS, SPY and IWM...I'm going with the gap up on Monday, maybe a fade into the close in the afternoon, but Tuesdays, except for last Tuesday have been up.  Let's look at one more spy chart:

Here is the price action for the SPY since the November low.  Notice the channel since the November low.  I use the strong resistance line as the basis for developing the channel, and I make the assumption, that sub-channels, for lack of a better word, will have a fractal relationship in that they will maintain the same slope delta, within - notice the channel line at the bottom of the November low which has a parallel line above.  These are potential longer term channels intersecting the current trend...will something happen if price action gets there....meh.  The point is they are areas of which to be aware.  As a reminder, the green/red bars are the volume done at those prices within the data shown.  So, those price levels of great volume are likely to be inflection points.  The blue rectangles are gaps in the price action.

That's enough...

Market Week Wrap-up

TradeTheNews.com  Weekly Market Update: Japan Jitters Rattle Markets, US Jobs Data Restore Calm

- Global markets saw volatile trading this week as investors reacted to extreme moves in FX markets and worried about a possible June swoon. Early in the week analysts parsed conflicting official and HSBC May manufacturing PMI data out of China, while the US May ISM manufacturing survey came in at 49, its worst level since 2009 and the first reading in contraction this year. The Nikkei225 fell sharply again after Japan PM Abe laid out the third component of his plan to arrest deflation and get the Japanese economy back on track. At its lowest level on Friday, the Nikkei had fallen more than 7% peak to trough in the week; US and European markets were knocked down as well by the moves. Big moves in equity markets were complemented by volatile FX markets: the ECB held rates steady (many had expected another incremental rate cut), which strengthened the euro, which in turn pushed the yen out to its strongest level since Abe announced the first two legs of his reform strategy in early April. On Friday the US May jobs report came in better than expected, helping European and US equities erase most of their losses from earlier in the week and adding fuel to the debate on when the Fed would begin tapering asset sales. For the week, the DJIA rose 0.9%, the S&P500 gained 0.8% and Nasdaq added 0.4%. The DJIA's streak of 20 straight gains on Tuesdays was broken after traders ran the Dow up in anticipation on Monday.

- In a speech on Tuesday evening, Japan PM Abe laid out the "third arrow" of his grand economic plan. Abe's systemic reforms aim to generate 2% annual GDP growth (3% nominal growth) over next decade, up sharply from the 0.89% real annual growth (-0.46% nominal) seen over the last decade. To help achieve this ambitious goal, the government will push corporate consolidation, promote free trade, reform agriculture, boost capital inflows, and tinker with employment policy. Markets expressed immediate disappointment with the plan and the Nikkei lost 3.8% in the immediate aftermath of the speech.

- On Thursday the forex market saw the ECB hold pat on rates, helping to ignite the Japanese Yen's biggest session gain in nearly three years. There had been talk the ECB might cut rates again heading into the board meeting on Thursday, however the council held rates steady, which set off a move from 1.3110 to briefly above 1.3300 in EUR/USD. The stronger euro helped drive a 3% gain in the yen versus the dollar, as USD/JPY plummeted from 99.25 to as low as 96. Draghi's comments on the conference call held absolutely nothing new, and his attempt to talk down the euro gave the green light for some long euro trades, which were exacerbated by jitters ahead of the US jobs report.

- The US May jobs report defied predictions of disaster with a non-farm payrolls number of +175K that was better than expected and much better than Wednesday's ADP figure of +135K (April's NFP was +149K). However several other components were weaker than expected. The prior month's nonfarm payroll was revised lower, taking the three-month average for NFP to +155K, well below the Q4 2012 pace which averaged +237K/month. The unemployment rate rose a tenth of a percentage point to 7.6%, driven by an increase in labor force participation (which is itself a hopeful sign).

- President Obama is meeting with China Premier Xi Jinping today and Saturday for an intimate one-on-one summit. There are hopes the two leaders can develop a more personal connection and help begin reducing some of the suspicion on both sides of the Pacific. In a speech earlier in the week, Xi said that China can't grow in isolation, while Vice Premier Zhang commented that Beijing attached equal importance to both imports and exports. However on Friday, just ahead of the meeting between Xi and Obama, official Chinese mouthpiece Xinhua published an article asserting that the yuan is approaching equilibrium with dollar. Note that overnight, the PBoC sets the yuan mid-point at another record high versus the dollar, at 6.1620 v 6.1362 prior.

- Coming into the week, there were suspiciously diverging manufacturing PMI data out of China. The official release was 50.8 (v 50.0e), confounding analysts looking for a deterioration after the 49.6 reading in the HSBC flash PMI for the 1st half of the month. The subsequent release of the final HSBC figure showed that the 2nd half of May produced an even steeper deceleration of 49.2, the lowest reading since October 2012, with exports orders down for the second consecutive month and new orders slipping to 48.7, the first reading below 50 since September 2012. Analysts have in part attributed the divergence to large state-owned firms outpacing the smaller institutions surveyed by the HSBC. Others continued to question the accuracy of China's official economic data, withholding judgment until the industry indicators for power consumption and bank lending are released next week.

- The Financial Stability Oversight Council (FSOC) has proposed designating non-bank firms AIG, Prudential and GE Capital as systemically important financial institutions (SIFI), marking them for heightened regulatory oversight. Other companies could be named, but only three have come out to disclose it publically so far.

- US auto sales improved in May as the industry SAAR rebounded to 15.3M after slipping below 15M in April for the first time since last October. Ford and Chrysler saw another month of double-digit sales gains, up 14% and 11%, respectively. However GM saw only a 3% sales gain due to softness in fleet sales, but still slightly surpassed expectations. Note that Ford's F-series sales grew 30.6% y/y, as the housing recovery sustains robust demand among contractors.

- The EU announced that it would impose duties on imports on Chinese solar panels for six months. The EU and China have been negotiating over ways to rebalance the critical trade in solar panels as European companies complain about Chinese dumping. Analysts see the move as an effort to apply increasing pressure on China if ongoing talks drag on. For the first two months, the duties would only be around 11%, but tariffs would climb to 47% after two months if talks do not progress. The Chinese responded by slapping import duties on European wine and threatening to levy tariffs on luxury vehicles as well.
