Jul 25 2011

Somehow in this boredom we managed to find some adventure... started day nicely with sizable wins (RIMM short, notably), then traded profits away with a few too many small stops, then got most of profits back with couple wins. In my mind, whatever gets us through the summer doldrums with profits is good, no matter how big or small profits are.

Session Time: Mon Jul 25 00:00:00 2011
[08:41] {Threei}  US) Update on debt ceiling negotiations as of Monday morning
[08:41] {Threei}  After a difficult weekend in Washington, the debt ceiling debate now boils down to a short-term plan versus a long-term plan. Senate Majority Leader Reid is offering a long-term approach, including a $2.4T debt ceiling increase good through 2012 matched by $2.7T in spending cuts and no new revenues. House Speaker Boehner is offering a $1.6T debt ceiling increase with cuts determined by a Congressional panel and including some sort of enforcement mechanism. Boehner's plan also demands a Balanced Budget Amendment vote at some point. Boehner's plan would begin with a $900 billion debt ceiling hike right away coupled with $1.2 trillion in cuts over 10 years
[08:42] {Threei}  - On Saturday evening around 16:30ET, Speaker Boehner was said to have told aides that there has been no deal and that a "Grand Bargain" with President Obama is not possible, although he also said that no one is willing to default. Later in the evening President Obama met with Congressional leaders that he is opposed to a short-term extension, as that could trigger a ratings agency downgrade.
[08:42] {Threei}  - At this point there is disagreement on Wall Street about whether a default would have a negative or positive impact on US Treasuries, due to their safe haven value. Wall Street firms are having difficulty recommending which trades would benefit from a US default. Press reports have suggested that US banks were preparing contingency plans to deal with a potential US debt default.
[09:07] {Threei}  PIMCO's El-Erian: Does not expect a US default
[09:08] {Threei}  no other country can replace the UST's global role in financial markets
[09:08] {Threei}  ***Note that overnight El-Erian wrote that he believes that the US is at risk of a downgrade
[09:14] {ese} morning
[09:14] {Threei}  ese :)
[09:24] {larisa} gm :)
[09:24] {ese} interesting political system dn there in the US.......seems extremely difficult to come up with a compromise

[09:27] {ese} i think the ratings agency's are gong to dn grade them
[09:28] {Threei}  looks increasingly likely
[09:28] {ese} no matter what they do
[09:29] {Threei}  at this point it has become an issue of the short-term plan versus a long-term plan
[09:29] {Threei}  wich is essentially an issue of election positioning
[09:30] {Threei}  wow, folks are asleep still

Jul 22 2011

Another nicely profitable day with one stop or 4 or 5 winning trades. As for afternoon boredom, I'll stop making this comment - just consider it default condition into August, most likely till after the Labor Day.

Session Time: Fri Jul 22 00:00:00 2011

[11:28] {ese} which in your vast experience has produced better results
[11:28] {Threei}  if you asked "take profit or let it ride"

[11:40] {Threei}  break on the go with no consolidation is not my forte
[11:40] {_bobbyo} bars of consolidation needed?
[11:41] {jfjf64} mhs
[11:43] {Threei}  no hard fast rule
[11:43] {Threei}  depends on too many variables
[11:43] {Threei}  but there should be something visually identifiable as consolidation
[11:43] {Threei}  you previous one had it
[11:44] {Threei}  this one simply came from .40 to .50 in three bars and immediately broke it
[11:44] {Threei}  when the resistance hasn't had time to establish itself,
[11:44] {Threei}  sucker in shorts, shake out longs,
[11:44] {Threei}  thus collecting future buyers that will enter on resiatance break fuelling the move
[11:44] {Threei}  it's not a valid setup
[11:46] {Threei}  do I make sense?
[11:46] {_bobbyo} I was thinking more of a cup pattern on this set up, but yes no handle. need to wait for the handle.
[11:46] {Threei}  right,
[11:46] {Threei}  and even if you think of C&H where cup was started at about 10:00
[11:47] {Threei}  and this one is the end of handle
[11:47] {Threei}  then the setup is not very, umm
[11:47] {Threei}  noble china
[11:47] {Threei}  since cup and handle are almost the same lenght
[11:48] {_bobbyo} ok didn'know that about the handle
[11:49] {Threei}  what to know... look at any cup :)
[11:49] {Threei}  as a rule, handles are smaller than cups, right?
[11:49] {Threei}  I mean real ones, not charts
[11:49] {_bobbyo} yes
[11:50] {Threei}  chart wise,, the length's significance is:
[11:50] {Threei}  pullback is being picked up by buyers eager for a break, thus handle has
[11:51] {Threei}  a) less depth than cup since buyers hit it earlier on pullback
[11:51] {Threei}  and
[11:51] {Threei}  b) less lenght since buyers hit it quickly using that pullback, faster returning price to the break level
[11:51] {Threei}  if thos factors are not there then buyers are not that eager
[11:52] {Threei}  it's just common sense of players' psychology as charts reflect it
[11:52] {Threei}  nothing of that fancy indicators stuff
[11:55] {_bobbyo} i understand thank you. When you have legitimate ch do you have measured move target from depth of the cup.
[11:56] {Threei}  sorry, niot sure I underatand
[11:56] {_bobbyo} Oh did you mean enough of that indicator bs?
